General Cycling Discussion - genital numbness

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
After a 32 mile ride on Saturday, I now know what Genital numbness feels like. I was breaking in a new seat, and it obviously wasn't adjusted correctly. How long should this condition last, should I be concerned?

If it was'nt adjusted and you fix that it should'nt happen. If it keeps happening you got the wrong saddle. I use the ones with a cutout and that works for me. Also a tad wider in the back for my sitbones to be supported like they should be.

The only saddle you can break in is a Brooks. Anything else, you break.
With a new saddle, you should take it easy for the first ride, and check the adjustment often. If you start to go numb, then shift it, or stand, or stop riding.
Hopefully, your numbness will dissapear after a day or so. Hopefully :(
You need a saddle shape which will support your sit-bones, not your squishy bits. Learn to locate said bones and notice how they feel when correctly supported.

from all of the stuff i have read, you only do *permanent* damage with long-term abuse... (or from extremely high-impacts like from a crash but an uncomfotable saddle doesn't contribute to that)
so any numbness or pain or problems *should* go away quickly...
but yeah, definitely change something and don't continue to ride with numbess...

Please address this issue by its technical name: Sleepy Pee-pee. Thanks. :)
Thanks for all the input. Normally I wouldn't have made such a ride without testing new equipment first, but it rained every day leading up to the actuall ride in question. Anyone heard if the use of 'Gel' riding shorts contributing to this type of condition. Saturday was the first time I have tried this style of riding shorts.

Oh god don't get the gel shorts. INHO They suck! You will notice a few years ago anyway they were really pushing them. Then all of a sudden they were really cheap on sale, hmmm I wonder why...

It could be worse. It could have been genital stimulation. Bike shorts keep no secrets.

I've often wondered if that warm feeling when you're numb is actually leaking pee-pee or not. Now I know. :D

Cheap shorts don't work, neither does Synthetic material, Gel Shorts or anything of that ilk. If you can get them, the genuine chamois lined are superb for wicking away moisture from the delicate parts of the region. If the painfull saddle continues, try adjusting the noseup/down position. Some take a wider saddle, some a razorblade, so perservere with what you currently have on the bike, untill you cannot stand it any longer, or you don't notice the saddle. I have two different types of saddle. A Flite titanium, with the cutaway for the pelvic bone, and this is on both XC Solos. I also have a San marco that is wider, but with the cutaway again, and I use this on the tandem, where I am sitting on the saddle for longer.
You are not alone in the "numbnuts" syndrome, but with a bit of luck, it will pass.
