View Full Version : Let's Be Careful Out There

I ride a lot of evening and weekend organized club rides. Every one starts with someone stating that signs, lights, etc. are to be followed. And then many of us go out and ignore some if not most traffic laws. Wednesday night a rider was hit by a van where the road the group was riding on crosses a 4-lane, 55 MPH road. He went right past the stop sign and into the vans path. I wasn't there but I've heard the collision wasn't pretty and he's still in ICU. I've seen way too many riders do things like this and only by luck was there nothing coming. Now, I'm not preaching to stop at every sign when there's not a car in sight, just to make sure you look first and be sure.

I just want to keep all my fellow riders on the road so let's be careful out there.

And no doubt every single one of you wears a helmet. And no doubt every single one of you looks at those who don`t and thinks, `Euro wannabe...doesn`t he care that cycling is dangerous????`On second thought, no one person could be as stupid as the guy you describe, let alone a whole group. I`m calling this post bull****.

Sorry to hear about your fellow rider...

I ride with two different clubs- around here. One is far more conservative and will reprimand you if you yell "clear" at an intersection-- after all, people behind you are less likely to yield to the traffic sign, and the road might not be clear by the time other riders are coming through.

I agree a warning is occasionally needed, I see groupthink come into play when riding in large groups-- more than 2 abrest, forging through a stop sign 15 riders strong, only the first 2 stop, etc...

Wow.. that was quite un-called-for.

Soonerbent-

Thanks for the warning.. sometimes we all need a little "sobering up." Hope your group member pulls through OK.

I think that mike fellow (2nd post) is on crack or something. Totally uncalled for.

I've experienced the same sort of thing. Usually the person who has organized the group ride reminds everyone to follow the rules etc, but no one ever does. I think its partially to do with age and 'Group Speed'. The older, 'Group C' type people are definitely more responsible. The younger, 'Group A' type people are not. Its why I don't ride with the local group - i pass them on their rides (opposite directions) and they all just breeze through a 4-way stop sign junction - don't even slow down to check for cars or anything. On the road, they hog the entire thing up, not letting cars pass either. They do all wear helmets though.

Sad about the guy that got hit - is that particular rode a busy section?

That someone would blow a stop sign right into a 4 lane 55mph highway seems reasonable to all of you? Sounded like a joke to me. Your friend is in the ICU? What a shock.

I don't think so. Here's a link to the news video. http://www.koco.com/video/17175672/index.html

And I'll say again, I'm not doing anything but reminding us to be careful. I don't stop at every sign if I can see and know there's nothing coming.

You are a perfect example of why I don't spend a lot of time on BF anymore.

Sorry, I can`t make the link work. I`m assuming it`s something to do with the accident. It happened. I`ve been proven wrong. There ARE people that stupid. Amazing.

Yes, Sooner. I call `stupid` when I see it.

I think the operative phrase here, Mr. Wizard, is...`if I can see and know there`s nothing coming.` Compare apples to apples. That`s also not very smart, what you do, but certainly better than just, you know, taking a shot at a 4 lane highway being clear.

Calm down little fella. Don't get your mullet in a knot. You are obviously a stressed character. Don't take it out on us.

Going for the personal attack. That`s what I`d do if I were in your position. You can`t possibly have a valid criticism of my calling this guy in ICU a complete tool for doing what he did. Fire away, my friend.

Alright, buddy. You're right. But this isn't A&S. The OP wasn't about what could have been done differently. It was obviously a shock to the OP and he wanted to share his concerns. That's perfectly acceptable in Foo. We're all grown-ups in here (or at least most of us) and are pretty aware that blasting through a 4 lane intersection is not smart. We don't need to be told that and especially not in a condescending manner.

I'd suggest you quit making assumptions and lay off if you have nothing constructive to say to the OP.

Not gonna feed the troll, but I can pass along a first-hand account of someone who was there:

Ok...quit being a dick, noob...m'kay?
The thread isn't about the moron who ran a light and got creamed, it was an attempt by a fairly respected BF member to remind others to be careful and not pull similar bonehead moves.

I call em like I see em too, pal...you're being a dick...and this is my nice tone.
If you would spend some time getting a feel for BF before letting your fingers type faster than your brain, you'd know that foo isn't the place for flame wars and general rudeness...if you want that, go to A&S or P&R, where other dicks, including me, will gladly give you what you seek.

Do you know the actual intersection? Just curious...

(edit) Just saw the video. I didn't hear about this. My thoughts go out to everyone involved.
