Foo - Dogs like palm trees

To eat... *sigh*

I went to Home Depot yesterday and dropped some $$$ on shrubs and trees. Ah, the joy of home ownership. :) I planted a nice Queen Palm next to the dog run to give them some shade. I wore blisters into my hands planting this thing. I let the two nuckleheads out this morning. After a while I notice they are being exceptionally quiet - which I've learned is a portent of bad things to come. Yep - looked out and they were nom nom noming on the uprooted tree. :mad: I replanted what was left. I have no idea if it will grow or not.

On a side note I planted the "Stacey" tree yesterday too. Got it in the mail - an Empress tree. It was a twig with a leaf lol, which the dogs promptly stepped on. These things are supposed to grow like crazy though so we'll see.

Dogs seem to like to destroy any newly planted tree, as if they think you planted it just for them, as a treat. "Oh, look Daddy planted new treats for us!" BTW, sago palms are poisonous to dogs.

Good luck on them taking root again. I planted a couple of dwarf trees - a Fuji apple and a white peach. They were already about five feet tall and would fruit that coming year. When I came home from work my Rottie had turned them into two foot high stumps. :mad: They grew back though.......in a V-shape. :rolleyes:

hehe - there are 4 cats in the house and there's been a plant nommer here but no one could figure out who it was.

Well - the two preggers are in individual cat cages and the female in heat is in her cage in the basement cause she's annoying and spraying (she's my roommate's cat but I'm having her fixed in a couple of weeks, luv the little cat) and then ...

there's my innocent big boy.

I walk out of my room in the morning to go to work and OMG - there's a freshly munched leaf in front of my door - (Great!!! he leave's me trophies!!), so I scoop up the nommed leaf and flush it. But then I come home and open the door - walk in to a plant with, literally, a stub for a plant stalk sitting on the kitchen table.

uh oh.

Guess what mah boy did. He Nommed my roommate's plant - again. And to prove his guilt - he barfed green froth in front of us. :(

We're now trying to keep plants up from the kitteh experience. But he was SooOOooOOo guilty :D

You might want to contact your vet about the Palms just in case. I'm pretty sure that I've heard that Palms are poisonous to animals....we had some dogs eat a sago palm and they got very sick. Just a heads up.

Make sure the dogs do not see you gardening. Seriously. Not sure what it is, but if the dog can see you doing the gardening, they will go back to that area later and dig it up.

A dog will bury a bone, I assume to keep it. Maybe that's what they think you are doing. They might want whatever good stuff they think you buried.

Having a short dog, I put up those green wire fences about 3 feet high around the plants I wanted to save. It looks OK if you really are carefull and make it very neat when you install it.

Cute little things are'nt they. I do love dogs.........but recently bought another minature schanuzer (Panzer...adorable) and came home from work to notice he had chewed my semi-expensive oriental rug.

He looked at me after being scoulded and thought...WTF..you left it there.

I had to pry it outta his jaws. He's a wuss but he still has the jaws of a pit. He really liked that palm stick - must've been exceptionally fun to chew on.

Man, the palm apparently wasn't phased too much. Its shooting out new leaves already. I had some leftover chainlink and poles that I created a barrier with. Doesn't look totally horrible but I'd rather not have it. Hopefully they'll get used to the tree and leave it alone.

If your doggie is anything like mine was, expect him to totally ignore it for at least half a year. Then one day, you'll come home to a muddy yard because he dug it up and the palm will be torn to bits.
