I was thinking about heading up to mt tam and snatching up a hike/bike site for saturday night. However, i have heard that the traffic on tam can be horrible on the weekends. Is it doable? Should i be leaving early to miss the traffic? Later?

This will be my first ride up the mountain!

If you go up via Bolinas-Fairfax Rd. starting from downtown Fairfax, the traffic is not bad at all, at any time of day. If you go up from Highway One starting in Mill Valley, then take Panoramic, the traffic can be heavy unless you start really early.

Another option is to take the Railroad Grade fire trail up. They recently regraded it, so it's doable on a roadbike, especially if you're riding 700x25 or above tires.

Don't know if i could keep up since i will be loaded down. What route were you guys going to take? Is there a mapmyride link?

If you see a guy on a jamis coda sport pass by with camping gear then you'll know it's me ;)

If you pass me up mt. Tam with a bike load of camp gear...I'm heading home to sell my bike, or go on your diet plan!
