Foo - I've recieved counterfeit stuff, need advice

Hi everyone, I need your advice on a recent purchase, it is NOT bicycle related :p

I bought a designer (Burberry) hat thru an online store (they sell mostly jewerly and handbags), the price was half of the MSRP so I went for it...I received the hat and it's a COMPLETE FAKE!!!

I have a few REAL items from the brand including a similar hat...I'm so pissed because even at half the MSRP it's still a lot of money ($70)...I've seen similar couterfeit stuff at the local swap meets and they don't have the balls to overcharge, they know it's fake and the price it accordingly ($10 - $15).

If anyone have any advice I much appreciated, I wrote a very concise e-mail, but I'm not sending it yet till I get a second opinion, I know they're gonna claim they didn't know or perhaps I'm lying and do return/refund exchange.

Maybe this is a "one-off" mistake (because they don't carry hats and how they have one hat in there huge inventory of jewerly and handbags is beyond me AND coincidently the "hat" item is off their website!!!) But if I return the hat I won't have the "evidence"... I'm sure I get my money back, and if they minus the shipping I'm gonna go postal :lol:

Should I report them to the brand??? should I just get the refund and go on with life, this is taking time from my life arghhhhh!!! :mad:

I'm aware of counterfeit items, I've done research and I know it's street value, but 50% off is not a big deal. It could be a regular sale price or close-out. But you are right, if I paid $15 and it was a fake, that would be acceptable. I would've got what I paid for.

we mark our clothes up 100% which means 50% off is cost. It sounds like one of those to good to be true things. You do get what you pay for. I should add we do mark things down 50% but they are the stuff that is collecting dust on the shelf.

I would definitely send over an email and detail the claims you made. Sometimes, if a website is being honest, they really don't know.

I bought a Chanel purse from a police auction website. They usually authenticate the stuff they sell, so I was thrilled when I won the purse at the last second for a fraction of what I thought to be the actual worth. Then when I got the purse, I knew immediately something wasn't right. I sent off a letter as soon as I got confirmation by going to the Chanel store over on Michigan Avenue, and they immediately refunded the cost of the purse. Since then, I haven't bought anything off their website, though. I stick to consignment shops and outlet stores for my designer stuff. I almost had a heart attack when I thought I was out all that money, but with a letter verifying that the purse wasn't authentic, they did listen to my claims- they even called and said that they had someone come in and authenticate it before the sale, and I told them that they need to take designer clothes to the original designers' stores and authenticate, not get some dude's momma up in there.

I'd send the email. The sooner the better, and if you can get Burberry to authenticate the purse as not a true Burberry, then you'll have a little more proof so they'll have no choice but to refund the money if they're trying to pass it off as real. Don't threaten just yet- you can catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Just send a calm letter stating your claims with a copy of the proof of how you found that the item was a fake. Then if they refuse or don't respond, you can send a second threat email.

I'm not sure what store you have but it's not uncommon for clothing type stores to discount beyond 50%, but thanks for your input

I just sent a "calm" letter to them...(thanking them for a smooth trans and quik delivery, but I'm VERY upset, and suggested "perhaps" they got ripped off from their suppliers) Anyhoo I'm not gonna go the extend that you went, if they demand authentcation, I'll simply put everything in a big bag including all documentation, invoices, web page printouts, hat, my contact info...and drop it off at Burberry. Burberry lawyers can do as they please. These sellers are not gonna make me chase after $70, they can deal with Burberry lawyers.

The slogan to the shop is "Save up to 60% off name brands". If you are SURE its a fake, return it, and get your money back. But looking at reviews of the shop at bizrate would stop me from buying there.

Did you pay for this on a credit card ? You can always dispute the charge.

I would return the item as unsuitable. If the return policy of the store is reasonable, I don't think I would even get into the whole fake/genuine discussion with them. If they question the reason for the unsuitability of the item, you can say the color or texture of the hat is different than the picture on the WWW site and therefore unsuitable. If they give you a hard time, dispute the charge.

Gents, thanks for the input, but it's going to take more than a return/refund exchange to put this issue to bed. A legitimate business with counterfeit stock is a crime. However, I'm willing to accept one explanation; that someone bought a legit item AND returned a counterfeit for profit and I end up the recipient of the fake item. To resolve the issue, they should ship me a genuine 100% authentic hat, as described in their website...without hesitation, because distribution of counterfeit material is a violation (i.e. they are in a lot of trouble). Whether they can ship me a geniune hat is another matter, because the item is now taken off their website...makes you wonder.

Anyhow, I'm preparing a package for Burberry, giving them all documents etc and full discretion on the matter. They have my full support. I'm willing to kiss my $70 good bye in the hopes that a counterfiter is investigated.
