Many of you probably do not know me, but I live out near Spokane Washington, I rode a recent route with Dbikingman on wednesday that was 50 miles. I felt pretty good afterwards and thought on taking the 80 mile route with my brother who handled the last big ride we did (70) like it was nothing. The thing about this little offshoot 30 mile route from the 50 was that it was all hill and headwind, you have to love the west plains:notamused:.
MY brother did not prepare himself with good sleep and proper hydration the night before. At about 50 there was a noticeable salt lick growing out of his face. I was carrying 1 liter of water and my brother had his .5 liter, but he ended up drinking about .25 liter of mine and still cramped up. We were forced at 66 miles to call it day, it has been near a 100 all day and it was really getting to him.
We did the 66 miles in 3:45:00 which I thought was really good considering those hills, we would range from 10-14 mph on those buggers. All and all I think I will wait till autumn or spring to hit that route again, as it was too much for me right now during the summer with those hills. I know I could have finished the ride, even though it would have been a 15 mph average to the finish.
