What a difference gloves make! I've been getting numbness in the thumbs and fingers and some pain in the palms. Today I bought a pair of Specialized gloves with the gel pads and later in the evening I went for a 10.5 mile ride. My hands felt great! No problems other than just getting used to wearing gloves. I'll never ride without them again. I still may go for the trekking bars or bar ends only because I'd like to change hand positions but the gloves solved the other problems.

They also make that tape with the gell pads for under the tape. You may like that too. Check it out.
Make sure your seat angle is level or slightly tilted up.
Like he ^^ said, you might want to look at your seat position. Chances are, if you were getting numbness and pain in your hands, you're putting an unnecessary amount of pressure on your hands. Tilting the seat up might be one thing that'll help, or raising the handlebars, or even moving the seat forward just a little bit. Nominally, you should be able to lift your hands off the handlebars without using your back muscles too much.
Happy riding
