Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - Armadillo back tire?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Curious, has anyone ever used an Armadillo as a back tire riding fixed? If so whats your feedback? Thanks

I'm running an Armadillo Elite All Condition set of tires currently. I've found its a good balance of handling, speed and comfort. No flats yet 300+ miles so far.

I used Armadillos a few years back. They are extremely puncture resistant, but they don't roll worth a damn, and I always wore through them very quickly, even with minimal skidding. I suggest a getting a Conti Gatorskin instead.
They ride like $hit.
yes, especially in the front. it's like cornering on a solid tire. gatorskins are better, and pretty much the same price.
i don't skid stop, but after 3000 miles I've had only one flat (which was probably due to low inflation).

try the panaracer palsea. great tire. haven't had a flat in over over 4 months. its on my commuter, and a lot of my friends are riding them on fixed now. skids easily, but makes a hissing sound. LBS sells them for $25. either that or an everwear.

i've tried them.. they slide alot when skid stopping. No problems on flats for sure though.
Also i was expecting them to last a bit longer.
+1 on randonneur for rear

i've never caught a flat on an armadillo in my life, after a half dozen pairs on various bikes. when i started riding fixed, i switched to gatorskins on the back though. i use an elite in the front, but the plain armadillos just roll too sluggish, skid poorly and wear away a whole lot faster than you would expect for such a solid tire.

Haven't tried them, but I have a friend who really likes them. I ride gatorskins and swear by them (my rear wheels seem to last a lot longer, but maybe I skid less.) I've never had a flat while riding a gatorskin.

The ride terrible, handle terrible, and are a beast to mount on Italian rims. I have flatted with them several times.

I've had ARmadillo Elites for eight months now, I don't skid and they're not the fastest rolling things, but I love them and I've had no flats with everyday ridingl

What a coincidence.
I flatted a gatorskin today. I thought "Maybe I should start running Armadillos on the rear."

Trying my first pair of Armadillos this year. I bought them in May and now have over 700 miles on them and have not had a flat yet. I cant say how they would hold up to skidding as I run a 48/16 right now so I make no attempt to skid. I think they ride great as long as the pressure is up. I find it more important then usual to check the pressure and keep them aired up. They dont ride worth a darn even slightly low.
