Training & Nutrition - Indoor trainers

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I have been looking into buying a decent indoor trainer to use with the bike I already have, but the prices on them seem too much for me to justify. I know that it would be more convenient to do a workout on, but are there any other benefits? Or should I just save the money and put it towards some racing wheels?
I just purchased a CycleOps magnetic trainer and used it for the first time today. I rode for 70 minutes and man what a workout that was. For me it was definitely more of a workout than when I ride on the roads and probably tells me alot about my conditioning. I rode yesterday for 2.5 hours and did 40 miles as a comparision.
Main reason I bought mine is because I work full time and go to school at night so it'll be really convienent for me to just hop on the trainer for an hour in the evenins rather than loading up my bike and heading out to my usual riding route.

Depends... If you have time, just go ride outside. If you are short on time, or weather sucks then might be worth it. Riding on a trainer is really, really boring, most people would rather ride outside.

I found my purchase of a trainer (just a basic old second hand one) the best purchase i'd made for a while. It *is* boring if you just sit there, there's no doubts about that but just do anything to take your mind off it and it's easier - i just stick on the box, or load up a movie...
Where is really comes into it's own is with bad weather/winter training and specific drills - at least i don't have to worry about other traffic/pedestrians/riders when doing one legged drills or standing accelerations etc and i can get out there at 6am for a pre-work session - when i can get my lazy backside out of my nice warm bed that is! :) You may want to get a fan though as you'll not get any cooling effect like when you really ride!
Still, it sure ain't as much fun as really riding although i do hear that rollers are a bit more fun though! :)
