I'm wanting to buy a Campagnolo drivetrain (03 or 04) for my bicycle. I'm interested in getting the shifters, front & rear derailleurs, crankset, bottom bracket, cassette and chain. I'm curious which of these items I could buy at the Chorus level without sacrificing too much performance. Thanks.

Pretty much all of it AFAIK. The internals of the shifters are the same, for example. Most of what you get with Record is weight savings.

Save mucho bucks......you won't notice a thing in performance.

The only people I know that ride Record have way too much money, but refuse to share it with me!!! Go with the Chorus all around.

A small example:

Record Carbon Crankset $799 500g
Chorus Carbon Crankset $489 515g

So you pay $290 more for 15 grams, less than an
ounce of savings.

Go with the Chorus, you won't be disappointed.

I ordered Chorus and got Record by mistake. Poor me. :D

Now that is just dumb luck. Supplier was dumb, and you got the luck.

My concience got the better of me, so I called them up (them = totalcycling.com). They said, "Oh...whoops. How about you just send us an extra £100 and keep the Record?" I did so willingly; I figured it was a small price to pay to insure that bad karma wouldn't see me run over by a bus the first time I went out on my new grouppo. ;)

Now that Chorus has the nice carbon shifters, there is no reason to buy Record. The hubs may be worth the upgrade if you don't like repacking bearings annually, and would use the Record injector port.

Chorus.. you may be able to find 03, esp with the new 04 as a big upgrade.

BUT the upgrade, is big.

If you've got the big bucks, get Record, but if money is any concern what-so-ever, get the Chorus. Chorus and Record are almost exactly the same - I'd doubt if anyone could tell the difference blindfolded.

There's not a whole lot of difference between the two except for about 150 grams or so. The only thing that I would consider off the Record group is the hubs-here's why: the Record hubs have a grease port making it very easy to maintain the grease in those hubs. My Superbe hubs have a grease port and about every 3 months (unless they got wet then as soon as I get home) I inject grease intill it oozes out of the sides clean, then just wipe off the access grease and go. These hubs have over 150,000 miles and still rolling very smoothly-the secret is the clean grease, thus the Records should last as long as my Superbe if the grease stays clean.

The only other Record I might consider is maybe the pedals.

Chorus and Record perform the same basically. With record you get more CF.

You also get the Record name, plus R and D. This year's Chorus is last year's Record. Everything trickles down from Record, so all the research goes into Record, basically. That's part of what you pay for, too.

Record is for the "if you have to ask how much, you can't afford it" crowd.

If that ain't you, get Chorus.
