Can any one tell me what Chris Hoy is doing to produce these incredible times? I am referring soley to training, and what he may use on his bike, i.e. chain ring combination, I do not want to entertain any negative language regarding cheating/substance abuse, positive language only.

It's probably worth reading 'Heros Villains and Velodromes', written by Richard Moore, there are no specific details about the bike in there, but a lot about the process that British Cycling employ to get where it is. :)

Chris puts in a vast amount of training and everything the team does is geared to achieving Gold. Chris Boardman was on TV this morning talking about the success and said the approach is 'Is this process going to help win Gold? No, why are doing it', 'Is this person capable of winning Gold? No, well why are they here'. It's tough but it pays off

Since the last Olympics, the Brits have focussed on winning in cycling. They have had millions of pounds from from the national lottery and have superb facilities in Manchester The Brits have more world titles in cycling than any other country. In the past, cycling has been the poor relation - no more!!

The brits follow the doctrine of what is called something like, I think, cumulative gains. If doing something adds just a tiny percent they do it. This together with lots of other little extra percentages mounts up. It's not just in training but in lifestyle and nutrition etc.

This is also shown in the development of the bikes, every single little component was looked at to see if it could be improved upon since the world champs...

What is Chris Hoy doing?
Winning...

But I would be interested in reading "Heros Villains and Velodromes" for some insight.
You may also appreciate the essay written by the Aussie coach.

When I was working, we used to call it "process improvement," whereby we examined every aspect of our work processes and analysed them to death. We then determined the best way of caarying out the process, documented it for everyone using it to follow, then kept charts of process measurements so that we could see how we were performing and always looking to improve on the numbers. It seems to me that Brit cycling is using a similar approach. It worked for us and it's certainly working for British Cycling.

Well, he's Scottish, so it's probably all the Haggis he eats that makes him so awesome.

It's called the aggregation of marginal gains :) Dave Brailsford (British Cycling performance director) was asked if any gain on it's own made a difference and he said 'probably not' 'but put them all together.....'

BC also have a policy of questioning every process and procedure and basically asking 'Is this going to help win medals? If not why are we doing it?':thumb:

Actually there are plenty of stories about Chris Hoys training, In one an Australian coach was filming him train, he was making sprint efforts so hard that they left him retching afterwards. He just kept repeating the whole process, with identical results, several times - the coach in question was so impressed that he used the film of the trainng session to show his team the meaning of hard work.

I don't know the medical reason why sprinting really hard makes one hurl, but, it does. In the old days when I raced, we used to compare different styles employed by various hurlers after a prime sprint, i.e. over the shoulder, under the arm, etc. An Australian I got to know pretty well, Jeff Leslie, was a good barfer. He employed going to the roadside, and just retch like mad. Body builders used to call it "The barf bucket method of training." Some folks are more prone to this than others, but I don't see it too much anymore. But, if Chris Hoy does, then maybe it will come back into style. I can only hope so. It provides a real indicator of just how intense the sport can be!! Later.

Its been said that barfing has something to do with extreme amounts of Lactic acid in your system, I have no idea if its true or not but it seems to make sense.

If he consistently goes to that level then he's often going to a level that other riders won't go to. Therefore he trains harder, therfore he wins.

One of the coaches in So. Calif. used to, and maybe still does, run weeking ergo-trainer sessions in his garage. They were appropriately named "Bucket Rides."

What's he doing? Training harder than anyone else, that's what he's doing. A recent copy of Cycling Weekly had a few pages on his program and showed him training in a room of the Manchester Vel. He was on the Cateye doing flat out intervals. Next to the bike is a mattress on the floor. When he completes an interval he can't sit on the bike anymore so his coach helps him roll off onto the mattress where he recovers. Then he repeats it over & over. Beat that.

My dad won a competition that Addidas (Ithink) was running.

A demand for pics is fair enough I guess I'll see what I can do. Do I have to be in the photo? I may be dwarfed by his legs!

Yeah the commonwealth or "chris Hoy" stadium as its being called I beleive. I think its due to open in 2010 the condition of the bid for the the games was that it was finished early I think.

Don't know if you can read this over there But The BBC sports personality is a Competition to find the Sportman of the year- Sportswoman of the year- Team of the year etc.

This is obviously part of the presentation for the programme so someone is expecting the team to get awarded something

BBC' Sports Personality of the Year Awards:

Individual - Chris Hoy

Coach of the Year - Dave Brailsford British Cycling

Team of the Year - British Cycling Olympic Team

Of the top 10 individual finalists:

CH, Victoria Pendleton, Rebecca Romero, Nicole Cook, Bradley Wiggins. Let me see now, that's 5/10, or half, or 50%.

What? Smug? Us?

It is, in a typically British, suitably understated way, remotely possible.
