Like he** it is. Since going road a couple of years ago-I haven't done much mountain biking. But the thrill of climbing a hill at 3mph- missing the rocks and scree and mud to enable you to keep going up that hill- has been missed. So last night- Martyn came round with a mysterious noise on his bike that he wanted me to check out. Only comes under load so agreed to go offroad to hear it. Son-in-law ross and Mike made up the group. As I have only been keeping the legs turning on the road bike for the last month- I made the stipulation of a gentle ride with nothing too technical. Couple of long hills over rough ground and then finish up with a bit of black stuff to come home on.
4 miles Down the MUP to the easy long drag to the start of the Downs. Then the even longer drag that is steeper up to the highest point on the Downs. Start of this is broken brick and is not enjoyable. little grip- loose bricks and about 10%, under the trees so plenty of of moss to slip on aswell. Then open ground to the top of Butts Brow- the highest point round here. Across the top of fairly flat but a bit of a downhill before you hit the Golf course. Bit windy today so not many out losing their balls but apparantly- not a bad course if you can cope with the wind. Then a bit of playing about down into Eastbourne. There is a steep section that can be missed- and normally is- if you go up the hill, but it is very steep for about 30 yards. Time to see who still had legs and glad to say we all did. So then down for coffee and breakfast- reckon we had all earned it. And as it was the first time out for me and Ross for a while, the ride was cut short, but we had done 25miles by the time we got home- half of which was offroad. Time for a beer and I had it all set up by the pool-That is finally finished- but I had recorded the Track cycling overnight so it was a few beers- in the lounge- watching The Track racing- and enjoying the fact that the UK do rule the world at something.
