Advocacy & Safety - Is there a basic guide somewhere showing how to ride?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've been doing a lot of biking for a while, however mostly kept to trails and defined paths not on the streets.

Is there a basic guide that shows some of the basic issues or something that I need to watch out for when I start biking on the road? I'm picking up a road bike this week and plan to bike on the road quite a bit.

Find a group or rider to start riding with.
It is a learning experience.
Get a mirror. I tried all kinds and ended up with the Third Eye that clips to my glasses.

That was a really good video. I didn't know the box left turn technique before. Thanks for sharing.

Read any or all of the Three Gospels of John:

John Franklin's Cyclecraft (my favorite, but all three are quite good)
John S. Allen's Street Smarts (short and to the point)
John Forester's Effective Cycling (much longer than necessary)

I'll second John Allen's Bicycling Street Smarts. Mr. Allen has posted an on-line version, which you may read right here. (http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/usa/index.htm)

Look up your home state's bicycling laws. Read them and know them.
