i want a bike i can take on trails. but also on the street. i want it to be light and under 1000

That leaves us alot of choices. 1000 bucks can get you alot on a bike. But a bike that good would probably be more specailized for the type of riding its made for.

Rockhopper Comp Disc or similar from Trek, Jamis, Giant, etc. If you can find a clearance Stumpy ($1400 MSRP) for $1000 grab it;)
