I just got my first issue of Dirt Rag in the mail yesterday. It's the Feb issue, which has a cover that's rather risque. My parents saw it and demanded me to cancel the subsriction to DirtRag right away. They said I could keep that issue, but they tore the cover off. I mean I'm 13, and I believe I am mature enough for this material.
So do you think Dirt Rag should have put this on the cover?

It sounds like complete BS to me, unless the picture is horribly graphic. I wish I could see it.......maybe you could find a link online to show the people that dont get the mag.
What? Was there a picture of Janet Jackson at the Superbowl halftime show on it? Could you describe the cover? Dirt Rag's website just shows some frog riding a mountain bike while sticking its tongue out. What issue number is it?

Here is a quote from a small article concerning the cover published in the mag:
"Sure, the subject just happens to be Christina Begy's legs wrapped around a hand crafted Spot singlespeed frame."
Basically, it shows her naked ass and the frame b/t her legs.

BTW, this cover is only recieved by subscribers. Different cover in the stores. Cannot find a pic of it.
Here it is. I took a picture with my digital camera (no scanner @ home), so you'll have to deal with the flash in the middle of the picture. There is absolutely no private parts showing, and the picture is done with taste IMHO.
It's really a great shot of an awesome looking pair of fit legs that belong to Cristina Begy. Begy is the 2003 24-Hour World Solo Champion, which she won in Whistler in 2003. Oh yeah, she is also the NORBA 24-Hour National Champion, which she won in Spokane, Washinton in 2003.
I don't understand the problem @ all. Your parents let you surf the Internet, but not read Dirt Rag???? Yeah ...... that makes sense.
Eh, I've seen the cover of some of my wife's fitness mags that are more risque than that... and just wait until you look at some of the ads. I agree with the others that say your parents need to lighten up.

So they're judging the book by it's cover? Once the cover was gone, did they go over the rest of the magazine to make sure the rest of the content met with their approval, or was it just a jerking knee?
Personally, and I'm speaking as a parent (although my boys aren't even nearly 13 yet), a bit of harmless titillation is not only reasonable for a 13 yo boy to be exposed to, but necessary. It's pushing it 'under the covers', if you'll pardon the pun, that does more harm.
That said, I'd really need to see the cover to make my final assesment. ;) Anyone got a scan?
I was a bit faster with the mouse ... and the camera. Check a few posts up. :)

Thanks. I spent too long editing and it came through then.
Now that I've seen it, I wouldn't even call that titillating. You see more skin than that in the average shampoo ad, or at the beach. What a bunch of squares.

Thanks for the "heads up" (no pun intended) about the cover. I'll make sure my son doesn't see it. j/k, he's 3. Actually, I'll have to explain it to my wife!

I don't know about you but I see a lot more in TV and movies. If its like that, shouldn't they take away your TV privilges and basically turn you into a hermit by not letting you outside?
Well obviously Dirt Rag thinks it's a problem if they only sent that cover to subscribers and made a different cover for the newsstands.
Tacky, tacky.
I don't blame your parents. You are 13 and they have the right to do that. Parenting is something I will leave up to your parents! I don't tell people how to raise their children.
As for Dirt Rag, maybe they should grow a couple and either print one cover or the other. What a cop-out!

I agree wholeheartedly. We raised two sons now ages 36 and 29. They were never sheltered from reality, only taught to use common sense. They turned out just fine.
A lot like me.
Oh... uh... nice legs in that pic, by the way.

This is what you do....download Kazaa, but at 13...you probally already use the program. From there click on search and then select video. Type the letters CFF into the search field and double click any one of the finds. Call your mom and dad in to watch any of the videos with you....I bet you can read the Dirt Rag for ever! Moral....they must not be aware of the net?!?

gwhunt23, the decisions your parents make might not always seem right to you, but none of us can tell them how to treat you and what will make you turn out to be the best person you can be. Personally, I have no problem with the cover, nor do I think I'd have a problem with my hypothetical 13 year old son seeing it, but then again I'm not a parent so my ideas on parenting should be taken with a grain of salt ;)
My best advice to you is to take this in your stride. Respond with maturity to your parents decisions, and they'll begin to realise that you are emotionally intelligent enough to deal with things such as this magazine cover.

i can't wait to get my issue! i will, however probably have to keep it out of sight of my 6 and 10 year old daughters. I can probably just keep it cover down on the coffie table. Although my 10 year old does ride a nice Haro V24 and has been know to look through my dirt rags. it looks like i'll just have to have a little talk with them about it. at least i got a heads up.
thanks,

Well, the cover does seem rather tame. I would think that even parents should know that their kids have figured out that ladies have legs and rear ends by the time they are oh 8 or so (the children not the ladies). I always have a hard time understanding why so many people LOVE risque stuff in magazines and advertisements on things that have nothing really to do with sex.
The worst offender, of course, is Sports Illustrated. I mean their swim suit edition is pretty tame compared to what you can find out there. It is amusing that every year people write in cancelling their subscriptions. Do these people live in caves or something and didn't know about the infamous swim suit issue?
I remember the "good old days" when the only really graphic explicit nudity you could find was in National Geographic. Of course, the nude folks usually had all sorts of creative tatoos and stuff that it sort of took the tilltillation out of it.
I think they screwed up buy not selling it in stores.I bet they would have sold out of that issue.

I don't know what my parents are thinking when they see this stuff on mags. I mean, I see worse stuff in health class presented by the teacher when we were studying advertising. The techer had some ads to go with the "sex appeal" on advertising and they were showed to the class. I know my parents approve of that because my dad teaches health at the same school, and they teach the same stuff. They even share teaching props (in this case the ads).
My parents know whats on the net, but they don't know how easily accesable it is. I take responsibility for this and do the right stuff (e.g. not download porn, etc.)
My parents have been so strict on anything risque, sexual, or anything like that. I just don't get it. They know that I am responsible and mature, they even have directly told me.

Did you parents read the contents yet? Do they know the magazine is not a "****** bike fetish" kind of magazine? Because that's what someone could think of if they did see only the front cover. Maybe a different issue would change their minds.

I am surprised your parents reacted that badly. Its seems like an overreaction to me.

Well, I'll go against the grain here.
Just because it's tame compared to stuff available elsewhere doesn't make it appropriate or right (just goes to show how much we've lowered our standards, IMO).
This hits the nail on the head:
"I always have a hard time understanding why so many people LOVE risque stuff in magazines and advertisements on things that have nothing really to do with sex."
What exactly is the connection with dirtbikes? Other than cheap thrills for the kids with subscriptions, that is.
Parenting is not a "one size fits all" endeavor, so I defer to their judgement in this case. gwhunt23, if you're as responsible as you seem here in your posts, take heart - your parents will eventually see you're mature enough to trust you and back off; in the meantime, know that they care and love you, so it's their best intentions at work here, not some slap at your interests or judgement (even if it seems like that in this instance).

Alright, now I'm curious what CFF stands for (but I certainly don't want to go through that whole exercise to find out).

What does trust have to do with it? Are you stating that they don't trust him to look @ a cycling magazine cover that features a bare set of legs? What's not to trust? Are they scared that he'll pleasure himself to the cover? I just don't get it. I simply don't see any issue here @ all. Perhaps in another 10 years or so he'll be allowed to go to the beach, and then when he hits 30, he can date.
I'm all for a parent's right to parent in their own way; however this type of sheltering cannot be good for the parent or the child. It's sad really.

bac- do you have kids? If not, you're speaking hypothetically; when you're actually there, what you THINK you'd do and what you actually do may be farther apart than you realize.
If you do have kids - more power to you for raising such independent kids that you no longer supervise at all what they read, watch, or do when they're 13 (but don't be surprised if their judgement sometimes lapses and creates problems you might have helped prevent if you were less hands-off).

Hey what's wrong with cheap thrills? Face it sex sells. Check out the Marzocchi Bomber Girls - what's the connection to Marzocchi suspension? Well lets just say I bought a Marzocchi fork... In fact that leads me to wonder why Fox doesn't advertise with scantily clad women, given the company name. I'd buy a calendar of Fox's Foxes :D

I do respect your opinion, and I really do respect the parents right to parent as they see fit, but I still don't get it. I do not have any children, so perhaps I'm not in a good position to comment. I just don't understand WHY any parent would forbid his 13 year old to look @ that picture.

Gwhunt - I've never read dirt-rag, but I'm sure there's far more good stuff in there than bad. I'd suggest you offer to let your parents preview it before you read it. That will give them a chance to discuss why they disagree with anything in the magazine, or to simply tear out any pages they really don't like, which will probably be less than one per issue. It won't take long before they stop worrying about the magazine. Your parents might debate whether or not you're mature to be exposed to risque images, but you're definitely mature enough to discuss issues with your parents and reach a compromise.
For everyone else - Come on guys, remember being in the teens? Heck, what about now? I doubt are you going to tell me that showing that much skin doesn't inspire any thoughts about sex. Most of you have already suggested so.
Ggwhunt's parents obviously have a particular view about the place of sex in this world, and are trying to lead him to the same type of view. Without being really philosophical, the practice of displaying and viewing images that arouse thoughts of sex conflicts with the view of sex as being being properly shared exclusively and privately by a couple. I know that's not really the popular view of sex lately, but that's another argument. The 2 main point are, it doesn't aid him in leading a chaste life and the point Allen H already made about it being his parents' decision.
Your folks are the boss of you until you're old enough to be on your own.
That being said, they sound awfully prudish. There's nothing wrong with the human body. Even less wrong with that particular body. ;)
You sound like a reasonable kid, and I'm sure you could find much more skin on TV alone. The folks might not have a particularly enlightended view about the body and sex, their actions show that they may have more problems on this subject than you ever will. Try to cut them some slack and remember you won't have long until you can make these decisions for yourself.
Maybe you could talk your local library into subscribing.
FWIW, I am a parent, of a nine year old girl and six year old boy. We're not particularly hung up on nekkid bodies, they've seen nudity (real people, museums, etc), though we're not nudists. Something like this mag cover might be a lesson for them, on the nature of sex and advertising. How to recognize it and to try seeing past it.

I think that you should know that your parents are just doing what they think is the right thing. Most of us parents do this, or we wouldn't be very good parents, and do it out of love. Hang in there, love'em back, and ride. You'll be 40 before you know it! :D

It is possible that the young man's parents responded out of a narrow religious conservatism desire to "protect" him from being corrupted by sexuality.
However, it also may be possible that they responded out of a disgust for the tendency of our culture to only value women for their bodies as sexual objects. It is a sad state of affairs that women receive equal or greater pay than men only in the job categories of modelling and pornography. This does beg the question of why the accomplishments of this successful bicycle competator are framed by a cover focusing on her legs portrayed sexually straddling the bike?
