Today was the Ididaride - a 75 mile loop in the Adirondak park. This ride was staged by the Adirondak Mountain Club. This was one of the rides I have been preping for all summer. The day started out with a nice spread of breakfast - coffee, doughnuts, bagels, juice and fruit. We took off at 8:30AM to crips temps and blue skys. We rode south along the Siemese Ponds wilderness area down to te Sagandaga river, rolling hills but mostly down hill as the river flows out of the mountains and into Sagandaga lake. We crossed the river and started the climb up to Speculator, after a brief rest we started yet another climb up to Indian Lake. Another short rest and we started the climb out of Indian lake (is this a trend...) to the top of the ridge west of North River - then the big downhill - a 1000' drop to North River and a gentle climb back to North Creek.
This was a great ride - 6800' of climbing over the 75 miles.
There werer about 150 riders - I was riding with 3 friends which made the ride that much more fun. If this had been a club ride we would have tried to hammer it out - we might have come in 30 minutes earlier but would have been waisted, as it was I came in at 1:30 in the afternoon feeling great with a rolling average speed of 16.4MPH.
After the ride was a great party - BBQ chicken, salads, baked beans, Vegi burgers, Brownies, Beer & Wine and a great band singing oldies.
I believe this is the third year this event has taken place and the first year it was hosted by the ADK - they did a bang up job. My only beef was that the rest stops were at the bottom of a descent making it hard to stop - you hated to give up momentum so consequently our group only took advantage of one of the hosted rest stops - I took advantage of two as I needed to refill a water bottle - this caused me to have to press for a few miles to catch back up to my group as they blew right by it.
I have a few pics I'll post a little later when I get a chance to dump the camera.
