I got a new frame with a TA bottom bracket, and a buddy gave me a TA crank. the left side fits fine and has room to spare, but the drive side goes on and touches the bottom bracket, so if i tighten the arm on, it won't even turn. if i swap them (drive on left, non on right) everything fits great and lines up, but its all backwards. do i need to flip my axle or did i do somethign wrong?

It soundl ike you need to reverse the axle. I've seen a couple of bikes where the bottom bracket was installed "backwards" intentionally and by design to get proper clearance on both the drive and non-drive side with the chosen crank. The axle doesn't care which way it rotates so install it the way that works best.

Peter White says that TA changed their Carmina cranks in 2007 such that they now need a ~6mm longer axle. Check towards the bottom 1/3 of this page.
