Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - First Fixed Gear Wheelset

I'm trying to decide on a wheelset for my first fixed gear bike. It's between these (http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_STOR20.cgi?Action=Details&ProdID=1148) or these (http://wheelandsprocket.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=8235).

Depends. Will you be riding brakes or brakeless? Non machined side-walls are great for brakeless riding.

Also, one's a flip/flop and the other isn't.

To be honest, either would probably serve you well.

on bikeisland you can buy the stock wheel set for teh motobecane messenger. something like $130 shipped. id go with that if i were you. comes with lockring, cog, tires, tubes, and of course, the rims. everything you need to get started.

I'm definitely going to have a front brake and rather have no intention of ever switching to a singlespeed. So yes, I'll need a front wheel which is machined, in white preferably.

Do the weinmanns.
They're decent enough for how much they are and come in white and machined.
Flip/flop Forumlas which are again decent hubs for how much they are.

I think I will go for the weinmanns seeing as this is my first fixed gear and I'll probably need the extra durability.

Learn if you like it or not? Maybe.

Or do you mean learn how to ride fixed? If this is the case then I'd go for the nicer wheelset. It's not like buying training wheels. The better the wheel set, the better responsiveness and handling.

I've had good luck with a couple pair of Wienmann's. If you can live with silver, there's a great deal on eBay right now for a pair of DP 18's with Formula hubs for only $100 + $21 shipping. (I've purchased from this dealer before and have been very happy.)

Yikes, its $40 to ship these to me... and I live in California! Anyway, it sounds like the general consensus is that I should buy better components. I understand this is the same for the majority of the bike (I found this out about the cranks recently) so I think I'll stick to weinmanns especially if this will be the wheelset that gets the most beating.

I'm a big guy so I avoided the 28H wheelset. Try emailing or calling Ben's & see if they have something in stock not listed.

Currently, I weigh 140lbs so I don't think 28H will be a problem. I'll give Ben's a call anyway though.

Alright, I've narrowed it down to these: Mavic CXP 22 (http://shop.greatdealsonbikes.com/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=GDOB&Product_Code=TR01&Category_Code=TR), Weinmann DP18 (http://wheelandsprocket.com/itemdetails.cfm?id=8235), and Alex R450 (http://www.benscycle.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=5622). I'm more or less looking for the most bang for my buck especially since this is my first fixed-gear bike. Furthermore, I'm not interested in the aesthetics of the wheel (I was before) just in the best performance for my money. Thanks again for all your guy's help.
