Foo - California is turning me into a sick, twisted person

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Ok, while I'm still a relative newbie to BF, I wanted to pass along the "Californication" of self based on a revelation I had yesterday. The Blonde and I were in Jelly Belly outlet store in Vacaville - she loves their sugar free stuff being a Type 1 - anyway, it just hit me like a sledgehammer, I'm looking at all the candy in the store, and I thought "How much energy/resources/labor did it TAKE to create all of the sugar necessary to make this stuff?"

Now, I'm not saying that to be anti Jelly Belly or Jelly Bean, but more from the standpoint of wondering what kind of impact our activities leave on the Earth, and that maybe we should be thinking about more efficient ways to make the various kinds of crap we use.

It is just like I recycle now without even thinking about it. In fact, I'll go to extra lengths to do it.

Sigh, in another year I'll be drenching myself in pachouli oil (sp?) and singing 60s protest songs, man.

I have so many conflicts about Ca. I hate the state but I like where I live, I hate the politics but I stay here anyway, etc.....

Anyway, I find the epiphany at jelly bellies to be worth a giggle. :)

Don't fret your pretty little head about Jelly Bellies. They're primarily solar powered.

I know what you mean, in inverse. I lived in California for most of my adult life, and I still find it hard here after almost 4 years.

I automatically look around for a recycling bin everywhere I go, and they are very rare here.

t least the one thing I missed most about California will be happening out here in September... NO SMOKING IN RESTAURANTS!!!!!! :D

Sugar Highs man!

You kind of get hyper sniffing the air.

I agree about the politics, though, its like tax tax tax tax and then give it to people who *won't* work. We can solve the Cali budget crisis by simply cutting the hell out of Section 8 and Medical... if you want benefits, you HAVE to work. Light rail here in Sac is full of people during the day... able bodied... who smurf the rails for free, have expensive clothes, cells, bling, iPods and then head off to the Section 8 housing. They're living better than me!

We also need to REQUIRE the Gov to live in Sac. Arnold's always talking about carbon footprints, and then he's shuttling on a private plane back and forth between LA and his hotel room here. Hypocrite.

And bars. That rawks. One of the reasons I did not pursue a pro music career in the 80s is I *hate* smoking. Its disgusting. Every smoker should be required to eat vomit for BLD until they decide they'd rather quit smoking. I might start playing in a band again here because you can BREATHE the air and not die.

I think we need to clamp down even more and ban smoking basically everywhere but private homes. No people standing on sidewalks sneaking one. And that's one thing I'm completely in favor of taxing the hell out of.

We've got an entire neighborhood of those here in Sacramento.

Traffic depends on where you live. SF traffic is *scary* and vomit-inducing. Sacramento traffic, even rush-hour, is not bad at all. Of course, I ride my bike 5 miles to work on bike lanes so traffic isn't an issue :)

There's tons of places in the San Joaquin Valley to live in that don't have crushing traffic, but the flatness, dust, farm chemicals and boredom will get ya. ;)

Oooooo Ooooo Oooo

I just got back from a conference in SF. I love that town. Then I spent 2 nites on Santa Cruz Island. Nothing but fox, grass, olive, fig, lemon trees, and a few campers. That was way cool.

It's kind of nice to be back in the deciduous forest though. California is a nice place to visit but I am not sure I'd want to live there. And if I did then the places I'd want to live in would be impossible to afford :(

Oh yeah - dam good Mexican food too. Don Pico's is my favouritest Mex place on the planet.

If I made 400K a year San Fran would RAWK. You only need 1 wardrobe year-round.

There are lots of (relatively) affordable places in California. Sac isn't as cheap as it used to be, but its not bad. Get away from the coasts, the prices go down, or go wayyyy north.

I agree, the Mexican food here rawks, and its much better than anyplace else in the US.

Ahh but see thats the thing, you move in 10 miles from the coast and it goes up 20 degree's. Screw that, too damn hot. Oh yeah and I went to Sequia NP and it totally looked like the place was about to burn down. It was bone dry and all the trees and grass was brittle.

Earth quakes, fires and mud slides, potential tsunamis - krazy.

We have interesting characters in Sac too. There's a guy that walks the river trail on the weekends in paint splattered overalls and straw hat, with a Christian cross on it, grinning like he just doesn't have a high enough dose of Thorazine. Then there's another REALLY tan guy that rides a mountain bike that has wind chimes hanging all over - and he's FAST - and he's wearing his iPod headphones and will stop every mile or so, get off the bike and dance like Stallone in the first Rocky.

I call the painter guy "Van Gogh" and the bike guy "Notre Dame".
