I have a hand buillt (not by me) wheel set with 28holes DT Swiss R 1.1 rims.

As I only later read, these rims are pretty sensible and tend to develop cracks near the spokes holes.
Hopefully wonīt happen but I keep them under close watch.

Should I come to the point to have to replace the rims, the alternatives (Mavic, Ambrosio) have a some lower profile 18-19mm instead of 21.
Since the spokes are the not really cheap aero-lite Iīd like to keep them.

There is a way to do so, maybe longer nipples or should I better give it up?

Thanks!

if you are using the single eyelet rim and have problems later, replace it with the double eyelet rim.

maybe the excellight then, if you have problems with your rim?

The Excellight or (as last beach) the Open Pro would be my choices should the present rims fail.
As far as I saw they have -like specified in my first post- a lower profile 18-19mm instead of 21 like the R 1.1

Thatīs the reason of my question.

you might be able to get away with a longer brass nipple, but I prefer my nipple heads to be fully supported by the spokes threads somewhere between the slot and the end of the nipple.

It's pretty unlikely a new rim with a different erd will allow you to reuse the same spoke length. All you can do is do the spoke calculation on the new rim and see how much different it is from your current spoke length.

I checked and actually R1.1 and Excellight would be just 1mm off one another.
This should be feasable.
The Open Proīs are 6 mm off the R1.1 and so out of the race.

My primary bike has a 28 hole RR 1.1 single eyelet rim on the front wheel (32 hole on rear). After 4 1/2 years of fairly rough roads I have no cracks, no problems.

Hope will go that way :o
The problems I read of regard the rear wheel with 28H - just my case.
Had I known of it before, I would have sacrificed a couple of grams and got the 32H rear rim, but I was looking for the minimum weight.
Basically I wanted an improved version of the Mon Chasseral, with bladed spokes.

There are other factors: riderīs weight (I am around 77-78 kg) - DT Swiss rates the single eyelet up to 90kg so should be actually OK - and spoke tension.

I really hope not to get troubles but in case I want be able to react promptly.

Depends if the new one calls for 1mm longer or shorter. If the original rim was built with moderate tension, but the newer rim is 1mm larger ERD, I would attempt to rebuild with increased spoke tension and I suspect it'd break even.

I round up or down 1mm in spoke length depending on inventory. For double walled rims it's not the end of the world if threads go past the slots of the nipples, unless it means you've bottomed out the threads before reaching the appropriate tension.

That's cool. Go with that!
