Listening to "On the Way Home to Earth" from the Visions of the Emerald Beyond CD. Totally out of control 1970s fusion music. DUDE!
That is all.

I like the trio "Friday night in San Francisco" with McLaughlin, di Meola, de Lucia. Great work. One of my favorite CD's at home.

The guitar playing version will influence music beyond his death.
The TV version, well, um... he'll fertilize the soil.

One of my favorite tunes by one of my favorite guitarists...accompanied by one of my favorite drummers, Narada Michael Walden! What's not to love?
McLaughlin kinda jumped the shark for me when he started triggering all those synthesizers (1975's Inner Worlds was an amusing idiosyncratic LP, but everything from about 1980 on sounds -- ironically -- even more dated), but I still find myself amazed, impressed, & enamored of his work in the 1970's. Such an incredibly rare blend of musicianship and passion.
I'm not as crazy about his recent stuff either...still, nice to see him still evolving after all these years.
I'd like to get that instructional DVD he did a few years ago - anyone have it?

Its still for sale, but the price is steep - around $120-$150 US depending on exchange rates. If I had it, I'd copy it for you :)
crap! Last time I looked it was $75:(

Yes, although its a shame that the quality of the ONLY live Mahavishnu (original) recording is so poor. They can only tweak it so much.

One of the odd cds I have by John McLaughlin is the Mediterranean Concerto for guitar & orchestra which also includes 5 or 6 songs with Katia Lebeque.

Ponty’s electric violin is also stunningly incredible on that album. My favorite Mahavishnu O album is The Inner Mounting Flame though. If you haven’t heard his My Goal’s Beyond give it a listen. It has a great acoustic side and a very interesting Indian Jazz fusion side.

Hmm... it's hard for me to be objective, because I've been listening to the live album for 30+ years, whereas I only just got The Lost Trident Sessions a year ago, so those versions all sound fresh & unfamilar. I'm almost disappointed that there's so much overlap in terms of which pieces they played on Between Nothingness and Eternity; would've been cool if the live album contained material from Inner Mounting Flame and/or Birds Of Fire.
Anyone ever hear a (presumably bootleg) recording of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra playing "New York On My Mind", the tune that eventually wound up on the 1977 album Johnny Mclaughlin, Electric Guitarist? I'm not saying I know one exists, but I heard that tune had been rehearsed back in the early 70's by the original quintet, just wondering if it ever got recorded by them. Fantastic tune.
