Howdy from Tucson!
Our current tandem is a 2003 Zona 'Davis Double'. The builder, Bob Davis, of Peoria, AZ has been building custom carbon fiber single bikes for discerning riders. He is now also building full carbon fiber tandems since 2002. We had the opportunity to test ride his prototype then and designed a new tandem for ourselves. Bob is not a production builder, he builds each bike himself and to your specifications. So you won't see a lot of his bikes on the road (he does business under ariZona Tandems). We are rather 'picky' and hard to fit folks, Rudy at 5'7", Kay 4' 10 3/4". Because of our small stature, we have a rather short wheelbase for a tandem: 63 1/2". The design is basically a modifed male/ladyback.
Have been riding as a duo since our 20th wedding anniversary, way back in 1975. The 'Davis Double' is our 5th tandem (#1 Follis, #2 Assenmacher Custom, #3 Colian Custom, #4 Co-Motion Custom). Got a bit carried away (as usual) design-wise, but Bob Davis was extremely accomodating.
Equipped the tandem with very good componentry + some carbon fiber stuff: bars, crankset + designed a few custom c/f ones, that Bob incorporated; including a fully adjustable carbon fiber stoker stem (with a ti glue-on for our garage door opener), c/f stoker's round handrests on her bars, a c/f rear luggage rack (not shown in photo) and c/f spare spoke holder (under the boob tube). All cables are run internally. But with all this hi-tech stuff, we still use toeclips (a bit of retro-grouch in all of us)!
Without pedals and the usual necessities like bottles/cages, computer, rack, patch/toolkit, it weighs in at just under 26 1/2 lbs. Ready to ride it's 30 lbs.
At our age do we really need such a machine? Well our 'go fast' days are gone but it is still a pleasure to ride a fine 2-seater, and the light weight makes the hills easier!
Beats sitting in a recliner with a TV remote!
Pedal on TWOgether!

That's a serious looking tandem. Is the bar tape 2 tone, or is it two layers overlapped?

Totally trick man! Have fun with it.

Hmm, another "retro" item, 90-degree timing on the cranks. Haven't seen them since about the Battlestart Gallactica days.
