bike opinion Trek 1000

I found a Trek 1000 for a good price. The picture shows an original fork but it looks more vertical than many other bikes I've seen. Is this bike known for being twitchy? or is the picture just misleading, or perhaps angle of fork isn't really a concern. I'm hoping this bike will be good for general road fun, 60 miles or less, and my commuting next year. I plan to add a rear rack to it.

bike mag had a really good opinion of it. I also know someone who has one and really likes it.

I have a 1200 about 4 years old. Aluminum with carbon fork and seat post. Tiagra level components. I believe the differences are in the components. This has been a very good bike for me. I ride about 75 miles a week most of the year. The aluminum frame is a bit stiff but despite this it is a very comfortable bike to ride. Have you ridden it?- if it fits well go for it.
PS id did dump the seat for a b17. and put 28 continnental tires on it.

IIRC, the 1000 used to be Trek's entry-level bike. Standard road-bike setup. Components are low-end, but if the bike doesn't have a lot of wear, ought to be fine. You'll probably need a better saddle (*cough* Brooks ;) )

When considering the price, keep in mind that new entry-level bikes run $575 - $800 these days.

I ride a 1988 Trek 1000 on weekend rides of 50 to 75 miles... works fine for me since I put a Brooks B17 saddle on it. It has all of the original components on it and they do just fine with proper care.

Dunno if I'd want to commute on it though. The 1980's aluminum frame is kind of brutal on rougher roads. My 1984 Trek 520 rides like butter, and it's my baby. I bought it new and I've been riding it for the last 25 years. So it gets the daily commuting miles! :thumb:

I commute 30 mi round trip on my Trek 1000. I don't know the year... Still kind of a rookie. I also did a metric century on it with no issues. I've replaced the saddle and use speedplay pedals. It has Shimano Sora components which I've had issues with, but after some tuning they are working well enough now. Most of my commute is pretty smooth, but I feel the parts of the commute that are rough for sure. I used it as a starter bike before deciding I want a Surly LHT and a separate road bike, a size bigger than my trek 1000. Go for it if it's a great price.

I commute on a 1000 and recently completed a metric century on one.

For commuting it works great, but for distance ride I would consider upgrading components or finding a bike with the components you want.

The saddle, front derailleur, pedals, and tires should be replaced for long distance rides.

Overall, great bike for the money.

i have a trek 1000 that i have done a few centuries on and have had noproblems. i'll probably upgrade in a year or two but id say it is a great bike to get started until you feel you'll keep riding enough to justify something nicer!!
