I just laced up my first wheelset on my singlespeed conversion bike, and im moving on to the tightening stage. However, it seems like its not working properly. I know there is a lot of interdependence of the spokes, but some seem to be too long. I got hte proper length spokes and did the proper number of crosses, and double checked each lace to make sure they are in the right place. Will these issues resolve themselves after I tighten all the nipples probably?

What does it look like?
If your rim looks like you have 2 too long spokes followed by 2 short spokes, you have the two flanges of the hub off by a hole. That's easy to do. If that's the case, you need to completely unlace at least one hub flange and move the spokes over 1 hole each.

I did my first set of wheels a few months back. And on the second wheel, the rear one, I came up with A LOT of slackness on some spokes. I realized that I had to really twist the hub to get a good, taught pull on my leading spokes before installing my trailing spokes. So I had to remove just half the spokes, the trailing ones, and was able to go from there.

You didn't state what part of the process was not working properly. How are you determining that some are too long? Did you verify that the sopkes you got were in fact all the same and/or correct length? I've had a supplier ocassionally through in an odd sized spoke. They need to be checked for proper length before you begin lacing. When initially threading the nipple onto the spokes did you turn each the exact same number of turns, (for instance three turns as Zinn recommends)? Unless all spokes are threaded with same number of turns before beginning the tensioning it will be more difficult to get the wheel trued laterally and radially. Without a consistent starting point It's hard to tell if there is a problem with spoke length or not. If you bought the correct length and verified they were all the length you think you bought and laced the wheel correctly then they are correct. If any of those steps were incorrect you might have to disassemble and do some verifying before proceeding. It's much easier before you tension to make corrections!
