Bicycle Mechanics - Road levers and MTB RD/cassette question

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. My drivetrain is in need of some TLC (read part replacement) and I was wondering if it would be possible to swap out my existing rear system which consists of a Shimano 105 RD and cassette (12-25) with a MTB rear (say Shimano Deore w/12-34 cassette - 9 speed). For levers I have 105 integrated 10 speed brake/shifter system. The bike is the 07 Kona JtS. I want to keep the front as a double 46x36. Brief discussion with people indicate the challenge (possible show stopper) will be the compatibility between the brifters and new RD/cassette.
Appreciate any advice.
Hanif.

10 speed shifter would need something like a JTEK Shiftmate to work with a 9 speed cassette, since the spacing is different.
Deore RDER would be fine, plus a longer chain.

You'll definitely need a mountain bike rear derailleur to handle the 34t big cog.
A 10-speed shifter won't work with a 9-speed cassette without some modification. If ShiftMate makes the gizmo that you need, that would be the cost effective solution. Another option would be to contact Santana Cycles about a 10-speed cassette with a 34 big cog.

Why Santana? IRD makes a couple:

Thanks to all for the advice. I might try the Shiftmate solution first as at present it is the most cost effective. Thanks again.
