I am thinking about putting a 49t or 50t chainring on my steamroller and wanted to make sure it will fit. I remember reading that the frame can fit a 50t chainring with chainstay manipulation. I am uncertain what chainstay manipulation would entail.

I can only found an old thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=97612&highlight=chainring+clearance+steamroller) on the subject and wanted ask if anyone runs a 50t on a newer model steamroller. If it makes a difference, I have a maroon frame from a complete bike bought in '07.

Edit: may have jumped the gun as I found this thread (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=81105&highlight=sugino&page=3). My frame doesn't have the straight chainstays. Still, anyone run a 50t ring on a steamroller?

i am currently running a 48t ring on my 08' steamroller...it would seem that one could fit a 50 on there

Have you thought about changing your cog instead? This might allow you to avoid "manipulating" your frame.

I am also running a 48t and have the same impression but would rather rely on actual experience.


Have you thought about changing your cog instead? This might allow you to avoid "manipulating" your frame.

The new chainring would go onto a nice set of cranks I am getting used. The new set has a different BCD then my current ones so I need a new ring either way. Also, a smaller rear cog will lead to a bigger jump than I want to make. As for the manipulation, I can't tell if Surly meant that they, as manufacturers, manipulated the stays to give clearance or if the end user needs to manipulate the frame for that clearance.

Some of the discussion in the referenced threads makes me lean toward the first interpretation but I am nevertheless uncertain.

There's room to spare. I bet I could fit a 52t or 53t easy. I am running SS with a Phil BB though.....

Thanks, I got the impression that was the case but didn't want waste money on a ring that would not fit.
