From the man himself, John Hess, on the club listserv:

Hi folks,

Foxy's Fall Century, Saturday Oct 18th, 2008.

On behalf of the hundreds of volunteers who bring you Foxy's Fall
Century, I'd like to announce that registration is now open. $40
entry fee until Sept 18th when it goes to $50. A hundred day of reg
spots will be open and will cost you $60, so why not just register
now? We've hooked up with a local firm for registration and so you
don't think this is some phishing email, here's what I want you to
do: surf over to the davis bike club web pages, then click on Foxy's
over on the left side. From there you'll be magically transported to
the registration site. Spread the word far and wide.

Tee shirts, long sleeved as usual are also on sale, $15 each.

Me, most likely I'll be setting out food at Solano Lake lunch stop that day. :thumb:

Whoo-hoo! Team Blue Jay will be there -- and we'll be sure to eat-n-greet at Lake Solano. :D

Super cool! I'm going to try this one, likely the 100km course. Though, for a newb, is 2,000ft of climbing a lot?

No, not really. That's actually pretty flat for a ride of that distance. Start riding a few hills and you will be fine.

Edit: The site says 2000 vert for the full century, so the 100K will likely be even less (though I don't know the course at all, maybe someone else can comment). Either way, it is still very flat for a long ride.

For the 65 miler, the wind can be the worst opponent. One year I remember even the birds stopped trying to fly. My average speed before the lunch stop was about 6 mph.
The only climb I remember on the route is up the hill just before the lunch stop, and back up the hill leaving the lunch stop. Short hill.

I've done this ride once and I remember the wind and the bad roads (bumpy/buzzy surfaces, some loose gravel roads).

I was signed up to do it two years ago but my appendix blew up a couple days before and I DNS'ed - turned out to be a rotten weekend anyway.

I'm going to try to talk my century buddy into it this year.

Edit - That was easy. We're in.

So. What kind of winds are we talking about? I hate the wind. I know it's an inevitability most of the time, but I don't want to guarantee myself 6+ hours of headwind riding :(

There's a bit between mile 80 and 82 where the road is smooth and there's no headwind... man that's a sweet section.

There's usually some wind, but the year I'm talking about was very stormy, probably 35+ mph winds. For almost the entire distance after lunch it was a tailwind. I was doing 25-26 mph with a 48-14 and wishing I had a higher gear

So obviously a single speed! I'm thinking of making this my first TaxiBike Century...I think 2000ft climbing is exceptable.

Might have to train it out there the day before though.

Oh, c'mon. HTFU and do the 100 miles. You know you want to. ;)

The metric is easier than these laid-back rides we've done. You climbed Cantelow, you can do Wooden Valley and Cardiac. If you do a couple Cantelow repeaters between now and then, you'll be fine.

If all else fails, you can suck our wheel on Cardiac...heh, heh. ;)

If you do this on a SS I'll buy you 3 of your favorite adult beverages. It's more than 2K ft. of climbing, and on a SS? You, sir, are one crazy bastid! ;)

The challenge stands but if you bring the Klein no one will think less of you. :popcorn

I rode the 100K route in 2006 and according to my CicloSport computer the elevation gain was 430 ft - that's what, 2 highway overpasses? :D

Is the 100 mile route available anywhere to view? (sorry if I blindly missed it on the davis bike club site). Also, specifically, is the climb of Cardiac hill going westbound or eastbound? Just curious (might try it out beforehand :) )

Not sure about a map but the Cardiac climb is Eastbound. It's actually easier than the other direction. Neither are very hard though.

Edit: Check out my motionbased from last year's Foxy's for a map.

I always dreaded the hill due to the daunting name. It's one of those things like seeing a wrought-iron fence with a BEWARE OF DOG sign only to find a sedated maltese in a body cast on the other side.

Actually, I do want to do 100mi but I also wanted to ride this one with Julie and I'm not sure she's ready for that distance yet. I don't think the climbing would be an issue, it's just the distance.

You'll be surrounded by 2000+ riders over the first 20-25 miles. Otherwise boring roads come to life with that many people around you. It's a blast!

Signed up for the family ride; an adult and two kids for $20. 'Doesn't get better than that. Well, OK, it could get better than that...it could be a longer ride, it could go over Cantelow, it could be totally windless....oops, I better stop, I see Rushfan and overthere pulling out my voodoo doll and sharpening the needles. :)

Yes, they do. The 100k is pretty flat, yet pretty. The 100 mi. gets hilly once you separate from the 100k folks. It follows the route we did for Monticello. After lunch at Wooden Valley you climb, and climb, through oaks and vineyards and oaks and vineyards. Then you make a right turn onto 128 and climb Cardiac Hill, the road the Amgen tour followed. Another stop at Lake Solano (Overthere will be there, yes?), then flat as a skillet back to Davis. There's a bailout just after lunch, but you need to know a local (ahem :innocent:) to find out what it is.

I'm looking forward to this ride -- it's fun, and riding with BF folks makes it more so.

Did Pete mention that he's visiting Chez Cgallagh & Red Rider the night before? Par-tay!

Well, now that I've got a road bike, the 100K is tempting. I've done a couple of 25-30 mile rides in the past two weeks without any difficulty, so getting myself to a point of handling 100K seems within reach. Must ponder ...

Wow, I signed up for the 100 mile, my first century... you made it sound a little more intimidating than I thought :twitchy: ... I've heard Cardiac hill is a good climb, but not something "killer". I wasn't aware of the "climb and climb through oaks and vineyards and oaks and vineyards" before that!

I did this two years ago. Didn't have the most miles in beforehand, was riding with buddies doing the century, and felt strong so ended up doing the century instead of the metric.

If you have local knowledge, you can extend the decision point a bit further. Ride on the century route to Pleasants Valley Road, then make your decision. Turn left for the full century, right to connect to the metric at Lake Solano. This is a prettier ride than the normal metric. You'll be off course for about 11 miles.

p.s. The "metric" route isn't exactly a metric. The ride director rode it last week and it measured 68 miles...more for your money!
