Man, I bet that thing can lay down a bead of caulk like you would not believe.

Michigander

The electric powered mini gun is fun, but seriously, being a trades worker, I've really been impressed by a lot of GE products. But that is the dumbest idea ever. If you need to caulk something, you need to strip it all off, and re do the whole damn thing. Putting a little bit of caulk on top of bad caulk is like putting toilet paper on top of a baby's dirty diaper, then putting the diaper back on the baby. Caulk is cheap, so it should be used properly.

Michigander, as a home owner, I cannot tell you how many tubes of caulk I have thrown away because I do not use it often, and when I do, it is for something like caulking around new baseboards after repainting a bathroom or somesuch. Only need to lay a bead about 12' long total. Would much rather open a small packet that hassle with getting out a tube, the gun, etc.

It's never been a problem for me in all the years I've done remodeling, but I do know it'll keep for a while. Just cut the end off after it's sat for a while, and you're good to go.

thats odd, usually when i ask for some role-playing and diapers, they increase the hourly rate.

Me neither- I stick a 8d or 10d nail (depending on the size of the bead I've used) in the tip between caulking jobs, and that seems to keep it pretty fresh.

Many silicone caulks are "moisture cure" and have a shelf life of 1-2 years. After that, they may not cure evenly, completely, or at all. This is true of GE Silicone Bath and Tub caulk.

So, like, those tubes of caulk in my shed left over from various DIY's over the years are probably no good?

This is the only kind I'll use when it's my choice. I'm not sure what the shelf life is, but it's polyurethane based, and I've never had one last more than a couple weeks before getting used up. I guess my opinion is kind of biased, because all I really ever use caulk for is outdoor applications and kitchen and bath remodeling. I get paid too much to have me doing indoor painting type stuff, cheaper to hire others or have a customer do it themselves, and I suck at painting anyway.

Whatever the case may be, I still don't like the stuff. If people find a use for the little things, I sure don't mind. But for me I have a hard time believing I'd be as good with a little tooth paste tube looking thing as I am with a caulk gun. Plus, like I said, I always need a lot, and can rapidly deplete leftovers.

Silicone caulk is almost worthless, especially when used by ignorant homeowners. Some people seem to think it will cure most anything, when what they really need is to tear their crappy stuff down and start over. Can't tell you how many remodel jobs I've done and a simple little leak repair turns into a major job because the owner squirted a whole tube or more down a small crack.

Fix it, then caulk it.

And by the way, don't use latex caulk in the pouring down rain, it will make a huge mess and you'll have to do the job over again. Don't ask me how I know this.

Yeah, that kind of job needs the big caulk that takes both hands to hold.

You use one hand to pump and one hand to steady. If you do not pump, nothing will come out.

It varies with the caulk and the technique you use...

The annoying part is that even after you get it to come out, it keeps drizzling out in spurts for 30 seconds or so. Messy stuff that caulk.
