I was riding last week on my 2002 Lemond and all of a sudden I hear grinding noises from the rear wheel, and then I coasted to a stop. The der hanger is bent, the der is up in the wheel, and I have about 6-8 broken spokes. The bike is un-rideable.

Any idea what happened? It's a steel frame with about 26,000 miles (some racing) on it. Did the der hanger bend due to fatigue? Did a spoke break and get pushed into the drive train?

no--- the "der" does not fatigue--- you might have banged the der ever so slightly, bent the dropout--
as you shifted-- up--- caught a spoke and threw the whole shebang into a fast turning wheel--
without pictures, that's my guess- fixable yet expensive-- if it's not a replaceable drop

A tight link in the chain could account for this. It happened to a friend of mine, even the chainstay was broken.
If a tight link leaves the back of the chainring in a bent position and fails to straighten before reaching the rear derailleur instead of going through the rear derailleur it locks up the derailleur. Dependaing on how much force is involved the derailleur may be mangled or torn off and thrown into the spokes. On my friend's bike the dropout plate was broken off of the chainstay. Bike had to go back to the factory for frame repairs.

But at least it looked cool before it broke, without that silly old dork disc!
