Cyclocross Racing - Racing a Volpe

I'm in the market for a new commuter, but I've been looking at bikes that would make decent entry level race bikes as well. I don't expect to rocket through the ranks or anything, I'm just looking for something that would let me give the sport a try a couple times this season. If i really fell for racing I could always get a race bike later.

Do people race on Volpes? It seems like the Axis is more race worthy, but the extra 300 dollars is nothing for me to sneeze at for me.

I've also been looking at Cross Checks (hard to come by, most places don't have em in stock right now and I really don't love the bar end shifters) and Kona Jakes.

i race the san jose which is the same frame as the volpe except it has track ends.

i'd totally race a volpe.

Well, perhaps I'll be lucky enough to get schooled by you on your Volpe-minus-the-gears this season at some mabra races.

The volpe is the better all-arounder, the axis is the better race bike. The only downside to the volpe is the extra weight due to the steel frame/fork, sturdy wheels, and super wide gear range. It might be worthwhile to upgrade the tires too, if you'll be racing in sloppy conditions.
