Cyclocross - Surly vs. Specialized.

For my new "everywhere and everything" bike I am looking for a cross bike (for commuting as well as Sunday outings) and am torn between two that I really admire. The Surly Cross-Check and the newest Specialized Tri-Bike. To anyone that has tested them or owns one (or just even knows a lot about cross biking) I would like some input. Thanks.

The biggest differance is aluminim v steel frame & Carbon fork v steel fork. the level of componients on the Surly generally is higher. The list is long... these are very different bikes.

Which is better quality?

Just look at the web sites, if I saw the right bikes, the Specialized is a good value, and a nice ride.

Um...ride them. get the one that fits and feels comfy and makes you feel like you want to ride.

Surly has a great rep, steel frame, can be built up with brifters if you don't like the bar ends. It's also very low-key, and on the heavy side.

Specialized is very muted looking, has had fork shudder isssues and is less of a dedicated cross bike and more of an all-arounder.

In all seriousness, look at Konas (jake and JTS) Lemond's proprad (if you can find one)and the Bianchi Volpe (sort of a cross / touring mix) and and Axis.

And buy from an LBS that treats you well.

Actually the Tricross does not have fork shudder issues, more like a lack of quality bike mechanics that know how to set up canti brakes properly.

My Singlecross has Spec's front and rear racks installed along with 3 bottle cages and is used for absolutely everything from adventure rides to hauling home groceries, it's my car replacement bike. Great all rounder.

Is it just me or do CF forks seem to suffer from shudder more than steel. Or is it low quality CF forks. I've never had that issue on any of my steel forks.
