ghasp.

Just rec'd the most random email on LinkedIn... a boss I worked under for 4 years during college, I was a student assistant in Multimedia & Instructional technologies there.

Hey ARTIFICE! How are you? This is a little selfish, but I moved to Denver, CO and we're looking for 2 good multimedia designers for our team and I thought of you. Any interest in moving to sunny Colorado and make good money with State University benefits?
I work at [branch of CSU], which is a start-up. It's awesome. We pretty make up our own rules since we're new. Your voice would really count here. The job description is at: amazingjobdescription.pdf

Ok, so.... Coloradans, what do you think of Denver?

Another note... I'm moving into that new apartment in less than a week. At this point, it'd be about $3grand for me to buy out of my lease. Is considering this even practical?!!

In addition to moving expenses, you can see if the new employer will buy out your lease. If they want you, they want you.

I lived in CO for 19 years and would love to get back the Fort Collins area. I use to roller blade and play disc golf at the CSU campus in Fort Collins. Do it.

I'm sure UA would love to have you move to CO:innocent:

to be honest, I'm a little skeptical they'd be able to trump my current salary + benes.

thinking I might throw my resume in the bucket, though.

But CO is a bit of a benefit in itself. IMO.
You might mention your current situation, and see if they are amenable to working it out.

Colorado is awesome.
I live in the west Denver area, and love it. Lots of sun, mountains, good bike trails, good culture, and so on. I'm not quite sure of your current situation or what you'd be leaving behind, but I can recommend Colorado as a spiffy place to live.

I just moved to CO Springs. It's nice here, but being from a coastal state - and having pretty much lived my life along one coast or another; I am in the Navy, after all! - I don't think I'll retire here.

The weather is overall pretty nice, the mountains are incredible and the cost of living is about average. Denver is a bit higher than here.

Great place to be a bike rider, both road and MTB. Skiing speaks for itself. Hiking, climbing, pretty much any outdoor adventure is available here... except deep sea fishing or diving!

Good time to buy a house in Denver, too.

See what they have to offer. I wouldn't take a pay cut to move out here from where you are, but I'd probably move for equal pay/benefits. Especially if they'd pay to move me, which includes getting out of your current lease.

You have to ask? Do it!!!!!!

On the good side, Skiing, friggin ZOMG unbelievable skiing!, Mountains. GREAT biking terrain flats, rollers and Mountains. GREAT hiking, did I mention you can has mountains? Even CC skiing, the whole shebang. Pretty vibrant outdoors community. I  colorado

On the Bad side, UnsafeAlpine!! :D :p

As for the 3Gs, you can always ask them for a sign on bonus. But wait, is this Fort Collins (where CSUs at) or Denver.

Oh and I dunno about Denver but a few years back, Broomfield, Longmont, had rents in the 600s for a nice Apts. Although you prob wanna stay a little west of Denver if anything.

Go to the Mountain-Plains subforum in the Regional Forum for more specific advice from Coloradans.

While I'm not a native Coloradan and have only been in Denver for 2 years, I really do consider it as "home". No place is perfect, but I've lived in New York, South Carolina, Alabama, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, California and Texas, while my job has required extended stays in various other states and I can honestly say between climate, things to do & natural beauty it's the best place I've ever lived. You're also usually close to both metro & rural attractions and airports. An added bonus too: http://www.9news.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=95963 , which makes for good people watching. :)

Coming from some very cold states (I grew up in upstate NY and was in/around Boston for 15 years), the winters here (at least in Denver & Fort Collins) are a relative walk in the park. Coming from Minnesota, I would think one's experience would be the same. And even though summer highs very, very frequently reach 90+, it's still a piece of cake (I'll take 95 degrees in Denver over 75 in Austin anyday)The climate is also much drier than anything I had ever experienced (with the exception of 28 days in the Mojave desert!). I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to handle it (because I just can't HTFU sometimes), but I acclimated in about a week and it's been clear breathing since -- even my ragweed allergies that I'd have to deal with when I was east of the Mississippi are a thing of the past (knock on wood).

Put it this way. Last year I was looking at houses to buy in Boulder.

When I get a chance to go to Portland, I'll have to make my decision between the two.

When I drove through Colorado last year, Denver didn't make much of an impression on me. Of course, I just slept in a motel on the outskirts of Denver off I-70 one night, drove to see my grandparents in Aurora the next day, then moved on to Kansas, so it isn't like I tried very hard.

Artifice, I'm surprised you didn't take the job right away based on the skiing alone. :P

I live in Minnesota and have vacationed in Colorado and I'd have to say CO>MN, I'd see if they could buy you out of the lease. But at the same time if they can't you might be right with the impractical thing.

artifice
08-20-08, 08:22 PM
well, doesn't look like (with the exception of UA being a factor) that anyone has had bad news about CO? Wow, this seems so insane that I'd consider it- 90% of my life thus far has been in MN- my immediate family, friends, all here. I'll never know if I don't apply, and like my pops said "maybe you'll at least get a free trip to CO out of it." truer words were never spoken.

so, i replied to the bosslady, and here's our response.

Excellent, we'd love to have you join our team. We have a fun group that has a ton of work on our plates. It's a normal higher ed, FT position as far as the "contract" goes. What they really mean is that it's a 12 month position as opposed to faculty status 9 month position. I've been here since May 5th. The work is awesome because we're a new initiative, we can do things the right way, instead of the way someone else made up 100 years ago.

Congratulations on the promotion! That doesn't surprise me that you are doing so well. You're smart and personable, which will take you a long way. I, too, have thought about getting a flat in the city, but I have too much stuff. I'm living in the burbs about 4 blocks from work. No commute, easy parking and everything I need is nearby, so I'm OK with it.

Well, I hope you like your new apartment but I also hope you don't get too attached to it, so maybe you'll join us out here. I think you'd have a lot of fun here in CO and here at [JOB] We have both production and creative parts of our jobs. We work as a team, but technically you'd report to me. If that's a factor. :)

Pay and relocation costs are negotiable and extremely competitive.
Stay in touch,
bosslady

oh foosters, its looking bright. so, I have to put in an application via the university, but i'm pretty sure she's the director or executive director in that area, so her decision would weigh heavily on my hire, I'm sure. She was the one who always told me "if you like your boss, don't quit your job" (as she job-hunted in her industry... apparently she's now found something to make her move!) Either way, I know I like my boss NOW and having worked for her for 4 years, I know she rocks too. HMMM..

Yep, you missed the good stuff. I did for a while too, even though I LIVED in Denver. My ex at the time (a great girl), really didn't have the same tastes and interests as me and at the time I really didn't like Denver as it never really felt like a city alive w/ architecture, history, a music scene, etc. When we broke up, I got a chance to explore on my own and now, aside from San Fran, Denver is my favorite US city.

I would live in Boulder, because their "courageous and progressive" city council put a "carbon tax" on their people.

Soon...when taxes reach 100% of what it's dufus citizens earn , Boulder will have achieved a Utopian state, and will wink out of Existence into an alternate Universe, where God doesn't exist, and everyone lives at the expense of everyone else, and we all bike and drive our electric cars everywhere we want to go, and all our food and drugs are free, and our sex suitably kinky....man, I can't wait to move there. :D
