What's the difference? I was told one was for a double and the other a triple but there's got to be something more....

One is matched up to a 42 inner ring and the other to a 39.

... and it really does not make any significant difference whatsoever, particularly if you shift properly, by easing up on the pedal load, instead of "power-shifting."
