When i pull on the lever all the way down, the left brake arm moves a lot more than the left one, im not sure what kind of adjustment i need to make in order to solve this. Also the brake arms are pretty far from the rim to reach for any braking to actually occur, even when i pull the level all the way down.

Sounds like you have the tension set to high (tightened the mounting bolt too tight) and you did not adjust the cable correctly. Cable is too loose. Go here for help.

Y did u get a caliper brake?

Because that's the only type of brake my old gt bike accepts. It doesn't have those mounts on both sides like the newer bikes.

The cable housing needs to be able to move a bit with caliper brakes, cause when the calipers close (evenly) the distance from the lever to the caliper gets longer (try squeezing the calipers closed with your hand to see what I mean). If you have your cable locked routed tightly against the frame when the calipers are open, then the side of the caliper that the housing attaches to won't be able to move very well, and all the motion will will be in the other arm.

You need to set it up so that there's some slack in the housing between the last mount point and the caliper, so when you squeeze the brake lever the caliper can move away.
