Has anyone done one of those typing tests, alpha, and 10-key?

What is your speed? What are ways to improve typing speed?

Took me almost ten minutes to type this.

Honestly... lots of chatting to people on AIM/ICQ/IRC/and local BBS's for the past 15 years means I'm up to around 105-110 WPM with 1 or 2 mistakes every 200 words or so.

I can use home row, but I still make mistakes. I make even more when I try and push the speed. I know of a guy who is a programmer, and he claims he reached 200 wpm at one point with 98% accuracy. That is quick.

My 10-key is incredibly low, and the error rate is very high.

Repetition, repetition, repetition - at least that's what I remember from typing class.

On a good day I peak somewhere north of 100wpm. Lazier more fatigue-ridden days I float around 65-80.

My 10-key used to be much stronger when I had a full-size keyboard. But in the days since I got a laptop, it's gotten quite rusty.

having a keyboard that has good tactile feedback and a familiar layout will help a lot.
I lose a lot of speed when on a keyboard that has a layout I'm not used to.


train your brain be able to do two different things at once.
like patting your head while rubbing your stomach.
or drawing triangles in the air with one hand while drawing squares with the other.

I worked with a woman who was flawless at 110 wpm. AND SHE HAD LONG FINGERNAILS too.

I'm currently clocked, as per my last civil service test at 90 wpm with 3 errors, includes number keys and the 10 key pad for better number input and can also hit the F1 keys on the fly. :D

I re-learnt to type a couple of years ago and it was a very beneficial thing. I got up to 40 wpm with high accuracy before I got bored with the tutor and decided I had enough speed for what I need.

Anyway get yourself a typing tutor, I use this one, http://www.tenthumbstypingtutor.com/ which I found to be quite good and not that expensive. If you want to be a fast typist then firstly you NEED to be an accurate typist. Your accuracy and technique need to be right first and then your speed will just flow from there. If not your poor technique will just be a road block. Also with many tests they throw in rarely used characters and if you haven't been training recently they will likely stump you.

Humm....I don't think I've increased my WPM since 11th grade back in 87. Back then I averaged 51, I assume nothings changed.

As for the 10 key pad....I have to look when using it.

I learned to type ridiculously fast when I web-coded by hand. ;)

Mom was a typing teacher at the high school and college level. She can fly around a keyboard, even at close to 70 yrs of age, it is amazing to watch her at work. Even more amazing is to watch her take notes in shorthand.

I am probably in the 60 to 70 wpm area, if I try to use correct spelling and punctuation, I bet it would drop even more. I know my mind is faster than my fingers when I try to type out my thoughts, I often find my fingers miss words.

As others have stated, simply practice, practice, practice. I find my biggest flaw is hitting the upper row of special characters and numerals. I always have to stop and look for them.

What are ways to improve typing speed?

You could always try switching from a QWERTY keyboard to a Dvorak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dvorak_Simplified_Keyboard) keyboard. It's what the typing speed world record holder uses. :p

The last time I checked, I was at just under 60 wpm, that was a while ago, and I think I am a bit slower now.

I have always made many mistakes since I rely on the backspace key, and I hunt and peck.

Touch typing, in Highschool, I think I maxed out at about 20 wpm. My teacher asked if I was going to take typing the next term, and when I said no, she got generous and gave me a C.

I type with two fingers. The plus side of that is I'm amazingly fast with my blackberry. Everyone in the company I work with just stares my me knocking out paragraphs of text

I think my typing speed is limited somewhat by my reading speed and my poor spelling.

Anyway, the key to typing quickly is to learn to touch type without looking (did that twice... once on a QWERTY setup, once on Dvorak), practice lots (I've written hundreds of pages of stuff so far this year), and aim for a bit under your maximum pace so as to minimize errors (in bursts, I can easily type 120+ WPM). Correcting errors takes time, so it's better to back off a few percent and to not have many errors to correct. Besides, getting that last few percent is really stressful, and it really doesn't make that much difference.

70-80wpm. Mavis Beacon, man, & +1 to the person who stated IRC. That s**t will have your typing speed up in no time.

oh yeah - I hunt & Peck, two index fingers and an occasional thumb. Look at the keys....hence why I suck

It's been a while, but when I tried a few typing tests that try to use every key, I only get about 38wpm. But when I take a typing test that uses more realistic words and phrases, I can type over 118wpm with 96% accuracy. When I used to chat often back in the day, I could type exactly as quickly as I could speak. People would think I was just copying and pasting prewritten statements (who does that?).

I blame it on playing piano all my life. :)

I think I have slowed down, actually, so I don't want to test myself again.

My 10 Key speed used to be over 12000, but that was because I used a calculator most off the day.

Not tested it lately.
