these are in order from newest to oldest. the first two aren't totally finished as i need to some magnets to add the smiley faces i made for them (i'm going to make it to where the faces can be taken on and off).

i really thought i had done more than this. i will probably spend more time painting this semester alone than i have over the past year. i've only been painting a year if you don't count the car painting that was done 9 months before (there was a red close up version of it too, but it was stolen.)

the first two in differen't lighting conditions to show how they effect the way it looks. these pictures aren't totally accurate. i'm not sure why.

oh, and i've decided there are two reasons to make a painting.

1) for looking at (this can be just for fun like 1 and 2)

2) for getting a point across.

here's my thinking (i may need to spruce this up a bit)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clever?

What is clever? Is it to put something on the wall, something that no one knows what it is?

Is it clever to make the viewer's reaction somehow part of this cleverness?

Is it clever to to make people think of art highly because the understanding of it is rather exclusive?

No.

It's clever to put something on the wall, or wherever, bluntly.

To bluntly get your point across.

And to still make it interesting.

It's clever to get people to think, not “what the hell is that”, but, gee, that's a subject I should think about.

It's clever to inspire and direct thought.

To purposely confuse people in order to make it seem as though you've something to speak of is dumb, lame, cheap... etc...

For a good idea, an interesting idea, why, this is something that need not be hid behind the veil of confusion.

It is strong enough to stand on it's own.

Although, the point in making the art instead of writing the idea does seem to contradict the previous sentence... well... for art... it may not.

The art is to entice. There are many subjects for a viewer to see. Why, they could just sit down and watch idiots on TV!

So, the art should be made for fun! To entice the viewer away from that boring old lame ass comedy about a man ***** named Ramond.

Through this seduction, not only is the likely-hood of liberating the viewers money from his pocket to yours increased, the likely-hood of actually getting the viewer out from behind that filthy old advertising cube is increased as respect for the medium, the gallery, is increased.

So, pay not attention to the old fogey's who blather on about sophistication through their convoluted, inarticulate, and alienating vernacular. No, pay attention to the concept of conveying something plainly while using a little beauty to seduce the potential viewer.

this time i'm gonna use the url as jshhar suggested

THIS HERE PIC CONTAINS A FOUL WORD. IF YOU ARE SISSY OR A CHILD OR FOR WHATEVER STRANGE AND ILLOGICAL REASON CANNOT HANDLE A CUSS WORD YOU SHOULD NOT LOOK AT THIS. PROTECT YOUR CHILDREN'S EYES FROM THIS PIC FOR IT CONTAINS A WORD THAT DESCRIBES THE PROCESS OF THEIR VERY CREATION AND IS THEREFORE, LIKE THEM, ONE OF THE THINGS THE DEVIL HATH WRAUGHT UPON OUR FAIR SOCIETY. BE WARNED! FOR THE WORD IS HEINOUS! SO UTTERLY HEINOUS! I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW UTTERLY HORRIBLE IT IS! BEWARE! BY VIEWING THIS PICTURE YOU AGREE CUSSING IS IN HARMONY WITH ALL THAT IS GOOD IN THE WORLD AND THEREFORE YOUR EMBRACE IT FULLY AND WHOLEHEARTEDLY AS ONE OF YOUR MOST BELOVED LANGUAGE DEVICES.

Nice stuff! :) I like the water in the glass the best I think. You did a good job with Andy too.

Frankly, I like all of them and would be hard pressed to choose a favorite. ;)

The Warhol pic really captures the whole feeling of Andy, though, and the waterfall scene is outstanding as well.

Nice work!

I really like 1, 2, and 5.

2 is pleasing - sky - peaceful

5 is confusing and almost irritating - but that is something that I think you may have wanted to convey, especially with the different shape and point of view that the observer would take (this is the way the painting would be exhibited?

11 is amusing to me and captures my attention - distressed - rather emotional too. I would have this on my wall.

Keep it up! I went from high school to a artsy college and spent a couple semesters and everything from monies to enthusiasm petered out ... blah. What I hate NOW the most is getting the creative urge and picking up my charcoal and pad and sketching something out and ... it's just not there like it used to be. Extremely frustrating and enough to just eliminate any more urge to pursue it again.

:( Now I have all my background courses, private lessons, etc etc and - shoot I can sketch a freakin 3d chair with blindfold on (why? cause I probably spent a full year on that stupid chair as the center of drawings for one class) ... or even my own favorite item as a kid - a horse - no need to look at pad - it's just there - these drawings look just like how I used to do ... but I dislike how anything else comes out and I don't have time to spend to hone the skills that are gone. frustrating to look at what I now produce and think what I used to do.

Keep going - I enjoy your skills.

wow - nice stuff!

gotta show the wife this thread - she just had a birthday a few months ago and surprised me by asking for an easel and some paints and brushes. She is moving along pretty good but needs to boost her confidence...my friend who is a painter helped some...but these pics are very inspiring - thanks for sharing!

realize that painting on rough surfaces (if she can afford linen with a nice smooth primer this doesn't apply. painting on 91 thread count cotton cover in rabbit skin glue. for this it applies) is really hard on brushes. just buy the cheap ones. if you need some good ones for detail work, that's fine though. (i've gone through hundreds of dollars ($400-$600 thereabouts) of brushes and thought i might just save you some money)

Thanks!

I had some old paint still laying around (Jeez, I haven't touched a brush in about a decade, I think....) but all my brushes were shot. She got some cheap sets from Utrecht and I got her a starter set of small round Kolinskys for detail...She's using small canvas boards to start with (primed) and I gave her some sketch pads that'll take water colors too. She's doing acrylic now but my friend offered to help her with oils down the road.

I'm so stoked that she's doing this - she once showed me stuff she drew when she was little and she has a lot of talent! (No, not just saying that cause she's my SO)

I like many of the paintings, but I'll be honest, the thing that I liked the most, I don't know whether it was completely intentional or not...

The painting that the mods deleted (the one with the word that must not be exposed) I absolutely loved it within the context of how it is displayed.

By itself hanging somewhere, I would probably just shrug, and would probably be more offended by it than anything else, but taken as a whole in the way it was displayed, it spoke to me.\

So, was it intentional?

goldfishin

the bricks and box were intentional. i'm not sure how i got to putting them there. i did think it needed to be up off the ground, and i guess the bricks and box i found lying around just looked rough enough for the job.

That first one reminds me of the nicest parts of the Marin area, pretty much my favorite place in the world. NICE painting. Certainly my favorite of the collection.
