I have several bike pumps and I'd like to know what is the proper grease to keep them working properly?

Spray a small amount of silicone lubricant inside the barrel of the pump to lubricate the plunger. Do not use oil-based lubricants, including WD-40 type of products. Hot compressed air and flammable lubricants are not a good combination.

ive always used phil wood on my pumps and never have had any problems with it or any similar grease

Any thin grease is fine. Just a light smear though. Or a spray of silicone lube would work well too. I'd avoid oil though since it'll run and you risk blowing it into the tube. And rubber doesn't generally like oil.
Supcom, I know you're on a safety kick but our pumps can't build up the pressure or heat required to "diesel" oils or greases... at least I sure can't get it that high.... :D

You do know that real air compressors, which produce huge volumes of air at 175 PSI, and produce enough heat they can melt solder on copper air pipes, use petroleum oils for lubrication, right? No way you're going to get a hand-operated pump hot enough to catch on fire, unless you're superman.

A tribe in Indonesia (I think, or somewhere around there) use a square box type of tube, a plunger with feathers for a seal, and some vigerous pumps to ignite dry shavings. This is their fire stick!
As a youth I oiled my pumps with motor oil or whatever and have never been able to ignite anything. That was in the 70's when the valves had a rubber tube mechanism needing something like 20lbs to get the air through the valve.

IF it has rubber parts, I'd recommend a silcon grease. It's often ued as heat sink grease for electronics, valve grease for ceramic/glass containers that hold acids and similar and several other uses that escape me at the moment. OH- Vacuum grease is another.
