Advocacy & Safety - two recent cyclist deaths in San Diego...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The first involved a 46 year old cyclist in Vista, said by the motorist to have "run a stop sign."

The second killed cyclist was drug some 500 feet by a motorist who then ran from the scene.

Of course in neither case are there other witnesses to confirm what really happened, and the news stories themselves are somewhat limited in details.
Be careful out there.
Police continue to search for the driver in the second death... the hit and run in an apartment complex parking lot.
Thanks for posting, Gene. In the first case, the fact that the cyclist was subject to a two-way stop sign strongly suggests that he indeed violated the motorist's right-of-way and bore the unfortunate consequences of his own dangerous and unlawful action. Unless the motorist was greatly exceeding the speed limit, I do not see how I one can logically draw any other conclusion in this particular tragedy.
If the motorist had been subject to the two-way stop sign, my conclusion would be radically different, and I would be calling for full prosecution in a wrongful death case.

While I do tend to agree with you... and certainly the evidence points that way. Again tragically, there is only one witness to the situation... the other one is dead.
But I really can't in all honesty point a finger at anybody...

I hate hearing stuff like this but it is important so we can be cautious. Careful out there!
In the Vista case:
Vista Way/Arcadia is controlled by traffic light, not stop sign. If he ran a sign, I'd say it's a different intersection. Vista Way/Arcadia is a bit uphill northbound. Perhaps he tried to do a "red light runner" and paid for it.

Something doesn't add up. Thanks for the post!
Man arrested in fatal hit-and-run
San Diego police have arrested the man suspected in a fatal hit-and-run involving a bicyclist Wednesday in Mira Mesa.
The male victim, who has not been identified, was riding his bike on Capricorn Way when he was struck by a red Dodge Neon shortly before 4 p.m. Police said the motorist dragged the bicyclist about 500 feet before abandoning his car and running away.
Saturday morning, the motorist, Marcos Jeronimo, 22, turned himself in to Oceanside police, authorities said. He was booked into county jail on one count of murder.
The preliminary investigation revealed that Jeronimo and the victim, whose next of kin have not been notified, knew each other and had been involved in an ongoing argument, police said.
