NOTE: I posted this in the Road Cycling forum as well, but someone suggested that it go to Regional.

Since a guy decided to attempt making a forum bashing a particular bike shop (for a very minute reason), I want to make a forum that calls out really good shops for others to check out. Hope people can chime in!

From what I understand, this is a family-owned bike shop, but you would never get that impression when going into their store. They have a very diverse selection of everything, and all of the assistants are very helpful and scoured with information. I bought my first "new" road bike here, and even with lots of business going on, Eliot helped me find the right bike and took time to pan out any differences between my choices (though I'm a little bitter that I couldn't fairly test the Cervélo Soloist Team they offered because they only had a 58cm on the floor at that time; didn't like the ride anyway, and wasn't going to pay $2000 for another aluminum bike).

They also host several group rides that are pretty challenging; the route is really awesome, and it's helping me get better on the climbs. The people are great, and riding with triathletes is cool! I highly recommend.

I was very close to purchasing my Madone from here, but the shop above had a much more desirable bike. However, Dov (sp?), the owner of the shop, is a really awesome guy. He took the time to answer all of my questions to great detail, and made deciding between bikes a lot easier. The crew that works with him are really nice as well, as most of them race, which can be very helpful for people getting into that scene (one of the mechanics is a Category 1 road racer at the moment, and several others are very experienced in mountain bike racing or cyclocross).

As an aside, while I didn't purchase a bike from them, I recommended an old high school classmate to the shop to purchase his first road bike there. He bought it, and got everything he needed to get started!

They also host a group ride out to Nyack, but I've never done it because the times they have conflict with my schedule.

HUGE bike shop. They have everything you need. Period. The mechanics are very good, and Glenn is a great help. He also has a lot of options in helping people pay for bikes, so if you are on a tight budget, he might be your go-to guy.

Definitely a family-owned shop. While they don't have a very huge selection and cater mostly to mountain bikers, their mechanics are AWESOME. They did jobs that should've taken a few days that very same day...for very cheap! Highly recommended for service. They also carry Litespeeds, Merlins and Bianchis if you're looking for that.

I'm nominating this place because of how friendly and helpful the staff are. I've never bought anything costing more than $30 at this place but always get treated in a courteous and friendly manner. Maybe they understand that I'm not one of the local high-salary professionals, or maybe they're just really cool. Either way, don't hesitate to drop by. Whenever I am out on LI and need something right away (or need to buy something that won't break the bank even with LBS pricing) I try to give them my business - such a breath of fresh air compared to every bicycle shop I've visited in NYC so far, and most of their local competitors. Don't know about purchasing bikes there. I know they are on of those Trek-sponsored places but I think I have seen other brand bikes as well.

I'm also fairly sure that they have at least one really good mechanic here. I've asked him for advice numerous times and he always has an intelligent answer. They also always have a number of awesome machines hanging in the rafters that are in for repair so they must be doing something right.

Great shop and they always seem to have everything I need. Last repair: front disk adjust, both tires changed in under 10 minutes...this is by far my most favorite shop ever!

+1 on Campus Bicycle in Stony Brook

Name: Sid's
Location: 151 W 19th st, NYC
Comments: Swank new location. Good stuff on display. Friendly (as opposed to surly) staff.

Best of all - the mechanics rule! HONEST (imagine that), articulate (am I dreaming?) and down to earth (somebody pinch me....). They get all my repair/maintenance business from now on, period.

Name: Bicycle Habitat
Location:

244 Lafayette, NYC
Comments: Their tent during Summer Streets was one of my favorite stops - mech was super nice and super fast at tweaking people's rides. Nice folks at the tent. I'm a little too old/fred for the hipster vibe, but everyone there has been pretty nice every time I've stopped in.

Oh - and they hands down have the best #%@*ing website on earth...

...well, maybe second best, after these guys:

Comments: What can I say that hasn't already been said? My experience, aside of using their online velopedia for many many years now, has been to mail order. Their tech info via phone or email is first rate and fast. They ship incredibly fast. I get parts in NYC within two days or so. They have tons of odd parts you have a hard time finding anywhere else.

Shop location: Teaneck NJ

Comments: I've been to several shop in NJ and I would say they are by far the best shop I've visited, Michael the owner was very helpful and really took time explaining about cycling, fit and bike in general. They have a great demo program too which 2 of my female friend is doing as of right now. I highly recommend this shop of you're in the market of high end bikes.

Shop name: D'Anello's Amity Bike
Shop location: New Haven CT

Comments: You would be hard pressed to find a better shop in CT. Guy and Sue, the owners of the shop, have been involved with many aspects of the sport for years. They have excellent selection, knowledgable staff, extremely capable mechanics, sponsor a team, lead group rides, the list of virtues goes on and on. They are worth a visit if you happen to be in the New Haven CT area.

Shop Name: Gearworks

Shop Location: Leominster MA. (Central MA.)

Comments: Gene the owner of the shop and his entire crew are extremely knowledgable, and have a great selection of bikes. I would rather pay a little extra at a top notch bike shop like Gearwaorks than buying from the internet. They do alot to support the cycling community, and have helped me track down very hard to find parts.
