I'm on my last car and working to be car free. I'm driving the damn thing out...

It's a 98 Ford Taurus with 186k miles on it right now...6 cylinder I don't like to drive it anymore and it feels really weird when I actually do get behind the wheel.. but I figure I will have is JUST IN CASE.

Came in handy this week when my rear axle on the bike broke and it took a few days to get the part I needed..

but I'm back to bike commuting tomorrow..

Thank God.

I'm just curious what your last car was/is...?

2003 VW GTI 20th AE. Bought it, tweaked it, drove it a year, and then moved to a city. Sold it.
Before that, 1997 VW GTI. Bought it, drove it everywhere, traded it for the above.

2003 Mercedes C240w and 1995 Ford Windstar. Bought my MB new and it has less than 30k miles. The minivan is used by my father and myself (when needed). I rely on my bike and scooter to get around.

You sound like you have a strong emotional attachment to it nonetheless.

I recall some of the first cars I owned... I used to have dreams about them. I think that was largely because of the stress they caused... costing so much to keep on the road and always in danger of needing a tow.

Nowadays, I don't give them a thought. I currently dream about being on the road on a long, long bike tour. :)

Even when I had cars, I never really liked them. In fact, I've hated every damn car I've ever owned, even the VW bug. They cost a lot, they smell bad, they're hard to store, you get stuck in traffic with them on a regular basis, and when they break, you can't just look at them and immediately figure out what the problem is and fix it (or at least I can't). They're occasionally useful for hauling big, heavy stuff, but that doesn't justify actually owning one, unless you live on a farm. For anyone living in an urban area, I say: good riddance. Cars are much more of a burden than a blessing. Free yourself from your co-dependent relationship with a poorly conceived, financially silly machine, embrace the bicycle, and be much, much happier. And richer, too.

I bought my first car at age 32. Now, 23 years later, I've owned 5 total, in order.

1963 VW Transporter - my favorite, cherry with only 60K miles when I bought it.
1962 VW Transporter - a near clone of the first, but modified to cruise easily up the hills in San Diego
1962 Ford Falcon Squire Wagon - with front bucket seats from the factory!
1970 Chevy Nova with a 307 V8 to climb easily over the mountains between San Diego and Palm Springs
1983 Pontiac Bonneville Wagon - my current car. I like it, but I need to drive it more.

I've learned that I tend to be hard on cars, especially that they sit too much.

I'm car free:D (all we own are trucks:notamused:) I bought a gently used 1996 F350 diesel crew cab dually about 3 years ago. It is used for my day job (industrial construction) and on the farm to pull equipment trailers. In reality I expect it to be the last truck I will ever buy. I have a tendency to keep my vehicles a long, long time. 10-15 years and 500k miles is not unusual. Hopefully this one will last me until retirement.:thumb:

I sold my last motorized vehicle, a 1999 Dodge Ram, back in March. It was a darn good truck, but I haven't missed it yet. :D

My last car was an '86 Dodge Lancer ES. Bought it new, it finally died in April '99. Car-free ever since!

Last car was a 91 Honda Civic Si. Just got rid of it this past spring, now personally car-free... except my wife still has a 95 Saturn SW1 that I drive occasionally. And I have a motorcycle, a 97 BMW F650ST, which has stayed parked most of the Summer. Poor motorcycle. I used to be way into them, many years putting much more miles on motorcycles than cars; lavishing them with upgrades and personal maintenance. Now, it's bicycles. If it wasn't for one long moto tour in the Spring, I'd have more miles on bikes than on the motorcycle this year.

My last car

Left for its new owner in Vegas last week. Just me and my bikes now.... and my wife's car. I hope I don't have to own a car again. If for some reason, I can't get to work by bike I will likely buy another motorcycle.

^^^Nice car.

The only car I've ever owned is a 93 Geo Prizm, which I bought used in either 2001 or 2002. Good car, and I've only had to do minimal repairs on it so far. I've moved into a new apartment up near college, and I still have the car so I can commute to work. Once I've gotten a new job, I'm selling or scraping the car, and will never buy another. Oh joy! =)

Last car was a 1973 MBG/GT. It was fun to wrench on, handled great. Got pretty good gas mileage for a sports car -- almost 35 mpg on the highway.

My first car was a 1950 Ford 4 door sedan at 16 in 1962. My last car , which is planned to
stay in the family for 10 more years, is a 1993 Chevy Suburban. The 'burb has 117,000 mi
and is good for at least 300,000 so I'll keep it. :thumb:

No, I don't worry about gas prices 'cause being retired we only drive about 9,000 or less a year. :D

With my PAV trike & 3 bikes for me & a pimped out schwinn crusier for the wife we're set. :innocent:
