I have a rim-drive trainer from a few years ago. It works pretty well but you can get some slippage. You can't spin up really quickly. The good thing is that they work equally well with any wheel type and any bike. They also don't shred your tyres.

One big gripe I have is that it's very easy to flat-spot the rollers if you let them sit too long without motion. This causes a vibration for the first couple of minutes when you start up again until the rollers even themselves out. To prevent this, I release the rollers as soon as I get off the saddle. Some people have also complained that the resistance units tend to be weaker than with wheel drive models. I either haven't noticed or I'm just a wimp. One other disadvantage is the selection. While wheel-drive models come in anything from fan to magnetic to fluid resistance units (fluids seem to be the preferred choice), I have only seen rim-drive models with magnetic units. Mine's a mag. Other than that, they operate similarly to wheel-drive models.
