I don't even know how to get it out. And if I do get it out, then what? The humane society told me to bring it in. Yeah, the thing is stinking bad and I'm gonna put it in my car?
Suggestions? (I know this is prime material for jokes, but I'm really not sure what to do.)

Poor some gasoline down the well and light it up...no more smell, no more dead kitty.
How far down is it? You might be able to get some bailing wire, make a noose like loop and drop it down and try to hook a leg or the head or something. That's the first thing that came to mind anyway.
Good luck!

good thinking *shakes head* why am I asking Foosters about this...
long pole with hook on end, respirator with charcoal filters on face. Deep hole with bag of lime in back yard.
Dig hole first.
Fashion stich with hook
Put on respirator
Hook kitty
Place kitty in hole
pour in some lime (calcium carbonate) if you have any in the garden shed
fill with dirt
install cross (optional)

Is the respirator mandatory? Because I don't think I have one. Lime is for...containing the smell?

I would do anything I could to avoid the stench. Any sort of mask over the nose and mouth. Lime is for the smell. Not necessary either.
drag it out with a coathanger and bury it.
If funds allow, call a pest control service, i.e., an exterminator. Of course, the cat does not need to be terminated, but I am sure they will have some knowledge of disposing of pest animals.

so.. wait, you have lime hanging around but no respirator?
Call your local PD and see if they can send a reserve or someone out to bag it.
just pour the lime down the window well. Problem solved.

Animal control may well do this also. Call your local animal control agency if your city has one.
As to lime, it is a common soil additive for gardeners, so it is not such a long shot to have around.

No lime, but I dug a deep hole (that cat was huge!) and threw it in there. Found an old cartridge mask laying around and that pretty much eliminated the smell.
Poor kitty, but it died right under the kitchen window. nice smell to have when making food http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/2199_barfing.gif
uh-huh.
(wondering why UA sent out dinner invitations for 7 pm ...)

My bet is you've already got 2-5 cats buried in that backyard anyway.

I called animal control and they said they'd pick it up, but that it was going to take a couple days to come out...Yeah, I'm not waiting that long...

I imagine it died a painful death. Or ran out of lives falling down the well (assuming the well isnt any deeper then 10 ft). Any idea how it died? Or was it trapped down there and died of starvation?

I don't know. You'd think I would've heard it crying if was injured. The window well is only 2 feet deep, so it could've gotten out if it was healthy. Maybe it was in a tree and fell breaking its neck or something.
maybe the ex put it there.

Possibility. Cats go in to all sorts of strange places when they decide it's time to go.

This is gonna sound stupid but I had to google what a window well was. We don't have basements in Cali. :o
It's like heating oil. I only discovered what that was a couple of years ago. Natural gas FTW!
I guess I don't get around much.

That's very sad that said kitty is gone, but his suggestions are excellent. Make SURE said hole is deep enough that the body fits in it easily, put the dirt over it and water the dirty heavily so no other animal digs up kitty and drags the body all over hell.

That's actually probably exactly what happened... or, it simply fell asleep and died.
If it was a stray/feral, there's a good chance it had heartworm and that's what did it in. (shrug). Especially since he lives someone with abundant mosquitoes.
You need to get it out of there. Get a pair of rubber gloves that go to the elbows so you don't get anything gross on yourself.

This was such a great opportunity to end things permanently with the ex...and all for the price of postage. Tsk, tsk.
