Got all the hay in the barn and the corn and soy beans arnt ready yet. SOOOOO A friend and I are thinking of riding up the mississippi to the head waters and hang out at Lake Itaska (sp?) for a few days then ride back along the river. Anyone know anything about Itaska park and or the hostle there? Figure we will take about a week to get there unless we get side tracked then a few days expolring and a week to get back.

I was there about two weeks ago! It was pretty cool but not really worth more than a few hours to look around and maybe hike some of the trails. There's also a very overpriced bike shop that does mostly rentals but could maybe possibly do repairs if anything on your bikes goes wrong.

The lake is a big tourist attraction so there are two campgrounds (both RV heaven) as well as the hostel. My friends and I originally wanted to go for the hostel but they were charging $27 a night for individuals or $20 a night for each of the 4 of us if we took a 4 person room. Needless to say, we went with the campgrounds ($20 a night split 4 ways).

Considering that you're only a few days away it might make a nice trip. Also, northern Wisconsin was my favorite part of the tour, especially Rt. 13 after Ashland (awesome town btw).

If you're doing internet searches, the spelling is Lake Itasca. I've never been up there (silly relatives, why must vacationing be in the Great North Woods?) so I don't have much else of help.

Depending on where you are in WI, you might be able to take some of the state trail system. Last time I looked tho, the only linkage between our system and the MN system was pretty far north... everywhere else, it looks like you'd have to take a bridge with cars.
