Well actually got the thought while replacing Gina's rear tire today. When I bought her bike about 2 years ago, I replace the stock tires with some $40 tires. They have lasted 6200 miles but the rear is pretty much near the end of a safe roadie tire. Doesn't seem to be too bald but has a flat spot. For safety reasons, I replaced it today after 6200.

I slapped on a $50 tire. I'll pickup another next week for the front eventhough the front seems fine. Just can't have her riding on a mismatched set of tires.:p...Not exactly sure what I get out of a tire, but maybe 3 k. I use what I find in the closet. Maybe the stock tires quickly removed from her bike when it was new. I've done fine with $15 specials and bargains as taining tires. I do wonder what it would be like to ride a $50 tire, but just not for me. I'll spend it for her but I'm worried I'd only get about 2k out of the sucker like I do most others. That's too much IMO!

How much do you get out of your "roadie" tires. Not talking hybrid or mtb here, that's apples and oranges!:D

There are lots of variables to consider here. Road surfaces, temps, pace, average distance per ride, climbing, etc etc.

I think it's possible for a 14-15 mph rider who only does 20 - 30 miles each ride to get mondo max miles out of an economy tire if they keep up on the inflation, and rotate the front and back when the rear starts to show some wear.

On the flip side, an aggressive rider who hammers, does tons of mile a week, and climbs religiously might see much lower miles from a set of very expensive tires. Add in the extra sprinting/power abilities of the average Clyde who rides regularly and mileage will diminish even more.

2K out of economy tires seems pretty good all in all. I have a tendency to buy cheap, especially when favorite cheap ones are on sale. I haven't racked up enough miles on them yet to know about longevity, but this is aided by having three bikes I rotate depending on mood or happenstance.

20 yrs ago when I was a dedicated 200+ mile per week roadie nazi, I tore through tires like they were tissue. I did a lot of miles on some not so great roads, and climbed every chance I got. Technology has come a long way in the performance of polymers since then.

I just mounted a set of Tufo tubulars to my Foo, OCP, Bling Machine and am curious about longevity from them. I have never ridden tubulars, and probably won't venture far from home on them until I save my pennies and get a spare to carry.

Still, 62,000 miles on a tire is pretty good!

2,500 from cheap tires. $6 to $10 ones.
Ride the shoulder of many roads with Glass Glass Glass seems to be my worst problem with flats.

Damn good!

I expect to get 2,000-3,000 out of the rear, twice as much out of the front, but I'm Uber. Weight is a big factor.

Well, for the time being, I ride Michelin Pro2 Race tires. They might be thought of as an expensive tire, but I get them online for about $30-35 when they're on sale. I'll buy 4 or 5 and stock up. Use all 4-5 throughout the year at about 8,000+ miles per year. So, about 1,500--2,000 miles each?

Good to know. I am going to try and wear out my Race Lite Hardcases by the end of the year!

Don't know if I can make it with my work and family schedule but it is a tangible goal.

While they're not the raciest of roadie tires, I suppose my 700 x 28 Conti UG's count since they're not really treaded or knobbies.

I got nearly 2800 miles out of my rear tire, which I'm replacing today. Only had one flat from a bit of glass what got embedded and worked it's way through the tread. It's not threadbare, but it's thinned out in the middle to the point I should replace it. I might ride it for another couple hundred miles, though.

It's on my do-everything bike, so it's seen chip seal and glass and roadside gravel and a 90+ degree double where I'm sure the roadway was well over 100 degrees and a bunch of loaded grocery runs (carrying 60+ pounds of stuff.)

I will track my miles on this new set. I know my last set wasn't as much as what you people are getting. I run 700 x 23 and I run my air pressure at 115 - 120 every day, checked before each ride.

Geez, thanks a lot Beanz:D I now have a spread sheet with all my bikes listed to track mileage and hours of use in order to keep up with maintenance.

Next thing will be a column for $$$ dumped into each bike, and that's documentation the Spousal Unit can find:eek:

I'm doomed by the engineering side of my brain cell, and a need for data and stats.

No place near 6,200 miles. Maybe 2,500 - 3,000? Or is that 25,000 - 30,000?

Luckily, I don't have an engineer's need for facts and data. :D

almost 4000 out of my krylions. i was hoping for more, but i'm impressed with them. i got a pretty good cut in my front when i first got them. however, i never got a flat until the rear tire was already done-for.

It's called a passworded file.,.... In Excel or OpenOffice Spreadsheet, you simply assign a password saving the file. Of course she may ask why she can't view the file.....

Beanz - go for tires that are not so "sticky" but use a harder rubber. The sticky tires (race ones) will wear more quickly - they're intended to be more maneuverable but not to last. The harder rubber ones will wear longer and since you and Gina are not trying to race, they will be just fine! :D

I never get more than 3500-4000 miles out of a back tires, and that is with a Ultra Gatorskin or Armadillo type tire (an aramid puncture layer and high thread count). My wife has gotten in the 6000 mile-range out of a back tire, so it definitely depends on how you ride. I'm a lot heavier than my wife or Gina is, and am pretty hard on my tires in general. I tend to stomp on it at red lights, "stay my line" and ride through gravel and pavement irregularities that cover the width of the bike lane, love to ride hard and fast down curvy mountain roads, etc. As a comparison, I only get about 1200-1500 miles out of a rear regular road tire.

I get 6000 miles plus on my front tires, no matter what brand I put on there. I've never really "worn out" a front tire. Usually they get so old and dry that the side-walls split or crack, or I run over something big and sharp that slashes a big slit in the tire, etc.

Almost 7000 from my last set of Bontrager Race Lite Hardcase with one rotation. I put on another set, I'm going to rotate these a little more often and see if can up that total. I was very pleased with them.

2200ish on a set of gp's and 1800 on a set of pr2's ,

my mondo pro's lasted a whole 500 miles before the rear decided to seperate from itself (without any precursor warnings), just switched to pr3's and have about 200 on them and they ride great and are the best handling road tires I have had yet, we will see how wear is, but they do hold up well to glass and the goatheads and sand burrs around here.

oh should also mention these are all 700x21's

Mondo Pro's, Specialized, right? I paid about 40 for a tire about a year ago. A Specialized S-Works (not sure if it was a Mondo Pro or if it is the S-Works). After 300 miles and a descent down a mountain, I found a 3 inch chunk of rubber missing from the contact patch of the tire. No more S-Works for me!

I'm getting anywhere between 1500 and 2000, although the 700-28's on my hybrid are still in super shape and are sitting just over 2600 miles now.

yeah, my rear came apart at the seam where the tread meets the sidewall on a 45mph descent/curve. bike and I ended up in a rock embankment and about $1k damages to bike (and 1.8k to me). Specialized warrantied the bike/parts and luckily my med bills were covered by workers comp since I was on a work sponsored fun ride.

I ended up upgrading the bike (specialized covered labor and their price on the parts plus I got specialized pricing on the upgrades which is a lot less than retail). see the road bike section for pic of my bike after I got it rebuilt.

Also, i did a thread on the tire seperating and got a lot of replies with similiar happening on the mondo and mondo pro's and some of hte s-works.

Specialized makes great stuff and stands by their product, but I won't be riding another set of specialized tires any time soon. Their bikes and seats are great though. I ended up ordering a 09 tarmac pro frameset (got a discount on it as well from specialized) after the whole ordeal was through.
