I
am
old and slow

However...........

I am longing for that moment when I was twenty.

Small town midwest.....

My car was broke down.

Out came the trusty bike

Coast King 10 speed

nice ride for the time and place

Early summer after work about an hour before bar closing

This lone rider would drop off the bank bank deposit

Then.....

the air........cooler than it had been all day

Proceeding on a loop through the town

Streets empty

Racing top gear

through downtown

cross the river to the eastside

backstreets

kennedy bridge leading west

down the main drag through town

not a car in sight

sweat, a grin, rythmic breathing

turn up a side street

2 miles and home

all was right in the world

quick shower and lights out

I am riding again for that sanity

How OLD is "OLD" and how slow is "SLOW?"

We've got lots of young folks here in their 60's and 70's, so "OLD" better be about 80 or 90!

Nice poetry there, old-timer.

It calls to mind when I was in my early 20's and stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington. I lived in the little town of Steilacoom. My wife at the time needed our only car for work, so I used to ride my bike. I was a cook, and had to be to work at about 4:30am. The shortest route to the base was through some very dark woods. I had an old school generator light. Some mornings, pedaling through the woods, I'd just stop for a moment. Since the generator wasn't moving, there was no light except for a narrow strip of stars showing through the tree-tops. Deathly quite. After a few minutes, I'd panic and start riding again. I made that ride rain or (the night-time equivalent of) shine for about 4 months until we got a new car.

There is something oddly special about a bike used for transportation because you have no choice. I think you tend to become more attuned to it. Resentful, but attuned.

It does bring back memories. I have used a bike to commute two times in my life. One was in my 20s and the other was in my late 30s. In my 20s it was because I had to and in my 30s it was because I wanted to. Today I use my bike instead of my car as much as I can. I even grocery shop with my bike.

Welcome old and slow. Far better that, than dead and motionless. ;)
