Cyclist dies after hitting railroad crossing arm.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A motorcyclist was killed as he tried to ride through a Shreveport railroad crossing with a train approaching.

The victim, identified as a man in his 60s, died Thursday evening. Corporal Gerald Fletcher of Shreveport police, says the man died after he was hit by a crossing arm and fell to the pavement.

The arm hit the man in the face. The impact knocked off his helmet and tore the crossing arm from its mounting.

"Apparently, he was looking at the train and not the crossing," Fletcher said.

Never considered this to be a danger before. Crazy. Yes, it refers to a motorcyclist and not a bicyclist, but this could easily have happened to a bicyclist in similar conditions. And our helmets are far more flimsy than those motorcyclists use.

I don't consider railroad crossing gates a danger now. Ignoring them and/or not paying sufficient attention to where you are going is always dangerous.

BTW, if the railroad arm gave any resistance at all to the motorcyclist's impact I wouldn't be surprised if the motorcyclist suffered a broken neck among other injuries. No helmet would have helped.

Doncha think you should ask the mods to correct the title of your thread?

I hate to be a nit-picker, but the title you gave this story says "Bicyclist" while the story says "Motorcyclist".
