My mom had a steel bike she used for loaded touring, she'd found it in some new england bike shop decades ago. Don't think it was really sold in the States.
Did some searches for and all I come up with is Sella Italia Co making bike seats..
Does anyone remember a bike company called 'Italia'?

Could be a Holdsworth. Italia was their top-line range.

I also had an Italia bicycle, purchased new in the 1970s in Eugene, Oregon. It had a shortened distance between the seat post and the handlebars, which was great for me, with a short torso. (On regular 10-speeds, I was stretched hands all the way out and face down). The bike was lemon yellow. I regularly commuted 15 miles to school or church - at times carrying a guitar case, bungeed to the rack (we added) - with a red rag marking the extra length extending behind the tire. That bike went with me past graduate school. One day, I went to get on and the front fork broke in half. And it went to the great junkyard in the sky - while I grieved its demise.

I haven't seen an Italia since then.

At the same time I got my Italia, my parents got Raleighs, which they only recently replaced. It has been interesting for me to see the Raleigh resurgence....

So, your mother is right about the bike she had "long ago." Italias were great bikes.
