Bicycle Mechanics - Quick Cable Disconnects

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I've seen them on frames with S & S couplers, & know they exist but can't seem to find 'em retail. I was thinking of doing this on a bike to facilitate swapping handlebars from mostly upright to drop bars at whim.
I assume they're durable enough since they've logged lots of miles
I assume that the shops 'round here that handle 'em can install 'em but I prefer to do it myself if I can.
So
Couple O questions :)
- Do these take special tools, &/or training?
- Any place in particular I can get these tools if they're something special>
- Any good sources for the items themselves?
- Are they a single use, aka new cable new disconnect, or do they last through multiple cables (just wondering how many to buy.)
- Anything to watch out for while installing them? Aka I don't wanna faceplant into a car if my brakes pop apart.
Thanks
Hi,
I have one of these on my S&S coupled bike for the rear brake
Thorn-Cable-connector-for-bare-inner-wire-BRAKE-ONLY-Black (http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Thorn-Thorn-Cable-connector-for-bare-inner-wire-BRAKE-ONLY-Black-8561.htm)
There is also a gear cable version
Thorn-Cable-connector-for-bare-inner-wire-GEAR-Black (http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Thorn-Thorn-Cable-connector-for-bare-inner-wire-GEAR-Black-8560.htm)
Once fitted to a bare run of inner cable, they can be used to split and rejoin the cable as often as you wish.
I suspect you just need cable cutters and a small allen key to fit them to your cable inners.
I hope this helps.

Both Bruce Gordon (shifter cables only) and daVinci Designs (shifter and brake cables) offer cable splitters. I have the Bruce Gordon splitters on the shift cables and the da Vinci splitter on the rear brake of my Co-Motion S&S bike and they work very well. The shifitng remains accurate and reliable after they have been disconnected and reconnected.
They are easy to install but you need two inner wires for each installation. The only tools needed are a cable cutter and the appropriate allen key.
Contact Bruce Gordon, S&S Machine and da Vinci for purchase info. Actually, da Vinci is a one-stop shopping location for both types. Look here: http://www.davincitandems.com/comp.html
They are a one-time purchase and will last through multiple cable replacements.
Follow the installation instructions and be sure the allen clamp bolts are tight and you will have no problems. They are secure and work well.
