Yeah, I'm guilty of hanging out in parking lots practicing wheelies and goofy trackstands.

Anybody else here an enough to admit it too? haha

Yeah, I'm working on my wheelies right now. So far my record is "as long as it takes for the front wheel to fall down again."

I'm still perfecting my trackstands and backwards pedalling (bike hasn't been running long enough between 'rebuilds' to stop and perfect them) but I'm getting there! Can't seem to wheeleh my fixie for some reason, any other kinda bike (even tourers) no bother, but it just won't lift! The fact that I only have a front brake doesn't help on the confidence side either..

When I'm cycling I tend to just race around everywhere, do tricks and ***** when I'm cruising round on my MTB's but I just don't think it's right for a lightweight bike like mine (and most fixed gear machines) to be hopped/grinded/abused the way some fixie vids show.. I tend to think they've bought the wrong bike! Still love watching the vids, just something I felt needed to be "expressed"!

I'm still perfecting my trackstands

just a heads up, i learned trackstands on a fixed gear waaay faster by slooowly inching into intersections rather than trying a trackstand and bailing when it didn't work. as the weeks pass, the slowly inching turns into slowly centimetering, then slowly milimetering... before you know it, you trackstand for entire light cycles with no problem. it also helped me grow confident with safely crossing intersections between cars instead of waiting for light changes or large gaps (it's easier to "go" than it is to put your foot down and start over).

Adding to sp00ki's suggestions, when you get tired of practicing track standing with your dominant foot forward, try it the other way.
I found that practicing my non dominant trackstand actually helps my dominant trackstand.

As for doing tricks, the only thing I can do is endo's and that's thanks to my mountain biking days.

My track stands got a lot better when I tried to pedaling backwards...I still can't do full circles but once I felt comfortable moving a few feet backwards it wasn't a big deal track standing because I could always wiggle back and forth for a sec if I didn't have my balance just right.

For some reason when I'm pedaling backwards I always lose it when my top pedal goes past the highest point and starts going downhill...my balance gets all funky there or something.

Actually, now that you say it, I've realised that's where most of my perfecting comes from! I've even got a good bit better on my geared bikes (using the brakes and swinging it back instead of back pedalling). And it's the kinda practise where ya don't really focus on it too much and becomes more natural.

I'd also prefer to pick it up this way as it's more practical compared to floating around a park all day going no-where.

Cheers for the tips, pretty handy!

The next time I see a kid doing a trick on a track bike I'm gonna punch him in the head. It's really silly. Find something more constructive to do with your time.

Yup, and I'll punch kids who ride BMX bikes, and don't do tricks along the way.

LOL at people who are so concerned about what other people do. Find something more constructive to do with your time, quit wasting it policing what other people are doing with theirs. Seriously, this is one big fault of the world. As long as you're not infringing on other people's freedom, health, or well-being, then I don't care what you do with you night life, track bike, what the F ever.

i messed around every once in awhile for 6 or 8 months, then around may of this year i actually started trying to learn tricks and get more serious about it and practice and whatnot. i've recently been moving away from just riding in a parking lot though and have been searching out some spots and finding different things to do tricks on, or at least attempt them on.

I've only been riding for about 2.5 months though so I still don't know alot of people in general

do you break a lot of stuff treating your bike like this? how often do you have to true your wheels?

i also enjoy practicing tricks...it's fun and it makes you a better rider in traffic as well, not that i am out in traffic riding backwards but i have seen people parallel park their bikes

can someone help me out with bunny hops? i can approach a curb get the front tire up there and then i just sort of bunny hop to bring the rear end up also but i really want to work on one fluid motion, sort of feels like an olley or something similar...tips would be appreciated.

yeah... it's actually kinda funny to watch the new jacks "forcing" trackstands with their wheel jerking back and forth, and their legs straining to rock ever so slightly only to sloppily lose it five seconds later.
it's much more beneficial to slooooooow down and only put your foot down if you end up too close to traffic than stop in place and do something your brain hasn't learned the fundamentals of.

Not so much tricks, but trackstands, skids, and small wheelies (obstacle management if you will) which are things i sometimes have to use in every day riding yes.

4130 Surly Frame
4130 and Tange Brooklyn Machine Works Fork
Profile hubs to deep v's

I only have to true my wheels when I really fukk up. Usually from bad timing when trying to bunnyhop up or over stuff. It's all about finesse. When I first learned 360 tail taps and 180s I had to true them once every two weeks. Now I know how to land them and they're pretty dialed in.

That being said, I'ma lace my Profiles to 29r rims [they're still 700c] and run 28c Gatorskins. FWIW, I also ride this bike daily, so it's not geared down for tricks or anything. It has to get me to and from work 5 days a week [about 20 miles round trip] and I ride constantly during the weekend.

stunting on a bike geared for commute = rad.

iansmash
08-26-08, 09:57 AM
My bike is geared 46/17 which is awesome for commuting where I live.

Funny enough, I got my bike initially because I'm losing my driver's license, and even thought I haven't lost it yet, I haven't filled up the tank in my car in almost 2 months

EDIT

i like commas
