For that smooth, creamy texture.
I think. Either that or they're trying to destroy the world.
According to wikipedia..."Styrene is only weakly toxic". lol

Obviously government mind control.

I think this brings us back to the old "tastes great" vs. "less filling" debate.
so there will be space between the molecules. so it is buoyant and floats in water.

I think this brings us back to the old "tastes great" vs. "less filling" debate. That sounds about right. The stuff is used as a filler and they can make more profit per bar of soap because there's less soap.

that should be copolymer. and that stuff isn't toxic at all?
Anything is toxic at high enough concentrations. It's a matter of how toxic.

Styrene's not so great for you, but styrene polymer (ie polystyrene) is no big deal health-wise. You probably have used it extensively before.

For the smooth creamy texture is probably right.
I use old fashioned (currently trendy) hand made soaps without additives made just the traditional way and while I think they are great soaps you wouldn't call them luxurious in a blind test. They have a hard, crumbly texture compared to regular, commercial soaps.

So the crab meat does not dry out.
There was a great New Yorker cartoon with execs gathered around a pool, aghast in horror.
It was titled "The day the Ivory Soap sank at P&G".

Animal fat & lye ?
Yep. Although the trendy soaps I get are vegetable fats and lye but its the same deal.

one more reason I eschew the use of soap. Hygiene is over rated.

My ex-gf got me started with Kirk's Original Coco Castile soap (she was a bit of a health nut). I just went back to "normal" bar soap, and it sucks. Its like you can feel the artificial wax or whatever that they put in there. Try a bar of the castile soap, its not at all the grocery stores though.

the big thing about ivory soap is the fact it floats in water because it is "pure"
when procter and gamble changed the formula a few years back they had to re-change it so it continued to float or people would not buy it.
Actually, Ivory soap floats because there's some air whipped into the mixture in order to give it sufficient buoyancy. (linky (http://www.ivory.com/PureFun_SoapLegend.htm))

My wifes soap is not crumbly or hard. Tallow or vegetable oils and lye. Only additives are the scents. Honey and oatmeal, cucumber, cocoa powder and mint (had to remind myself not to taste that one. Looked just like fudge) I think she used two fake scents - Lily of the valley and the lilac.
Mainly natural colour too - even ph sensitive ones, anatto and alkanet.
We haven't bought soap in years. 2001?

Hand made soaps are RELATIVELY crumbly and hard compared to commercial soaps. Small differences make BIG impacts on peoples perceptions.

why does ivory put styrene/acrylates polymer in its soap?
Why not?
Because they need to make it 0.56% impure to make the commercials correct...
